Every time I try to open a picture it crashes. The MIcrosoft window saying the program has to close comes on and then it's gone!

Any clue as to what the problem might be?

I would try a re-install some file may be corrupted

Did you by any chance upgrade your mouse/keyboard drivers lately? do you get a "MSVCRT10.dll error" by any chance?

Nope. This is so annoying. I know there could prolly be a billion reasons why it is crashing but I'm at work and need to send in a design for our business cards and I dont have the friggin disk with me.

Oh well. :(

Thanks for the posts guys!

I just reinstalled the bastard program and the first pic I tried to open crashed the app. WTF? I even updated the app yesterday.

Any thoughts out there on what I can do it fix this or troubleshoot?

thanks in advance.

Try running CCleaner //www.ccleaner.com/ (freeware)

This clears out temporary files, and tidies up your registry. When you get to the option to save the registry, do it.

If that fails, the next place I'd look would be graphics card driver.

Have you called Adobe or checked the Faqs on the support pages? This is the second thread here in the past couple of weeks about CS3 crashing. Which means it might be a common problem, Perhaps they 'Adobe' have a solution.

Thanks! Will check it out.

I did go on the Adobe site & dloaded all available updates in the hope that it included a patch of some sort for it. I didn't notice anything about this being a common problem users are experiencing.

You could try a system restore to the last point the program worked

Using XP or Vista? You might want to look at the event viewer; there may be clues as to what's causing the program to crash. You'd save time if event viewer contains relevant information.

So I just did the whole registry clean up and nada!

Will try the restore. What is the event viewer & how do i access it?

THanks so much for the post folks!

I got the CS3 demo and it runs for about 3-4 images (if I'm lucky) and crashes without an explanation. I have been hitting the report button to hopefully someone can figure it out down the road sometime.
But I'm seriously considering NOT upgrading because of it.
At least until I can upgrade the PC.

I'm wondering if it is a virtual memory issue?

I doubt that it is. Mine just started crashing out of no where. I have to now uninstall it entirely and then reinstall to see if that solves the problem. It's a real hassle bc both processes takes a considerable amount of time. What a pain!

Uninstalling and reinstalling is usually one of the first things I do if a program goes whacky. It doesn't take all that long, and think of how much time you've wasted not just doing it from the start.

One of the major crash issues with PS CS3 is Microsoft Intellipoint V6. Reinstalling Intellipoint with V5.5 will fix that particular issue.

I originally bought and downloaded a copy of PS CS3 online, and I had the same problem you did. Every time I tried to open an image I'd get a crash--and some of them were blue screen crashes. I got completely fed up with trying to use that software and asked for a refund, which I got after promising to destroy the software, which I did. A few weeks later, I purchased a boxed copy of PS CS3 in a store, installed it and downloaded updates from the Adobe site and have had no trouble with CS3 caused crashes since then (touch wood). I have no explanation for why the DVD copy worked for me while the downloaded copy didn't, but maybe someone else has an explanation for this. Did you download your copy or purchase the DVD version?

This seems promising. Will try.

Aliqui, you are right as repairing which is the same as reinstalling is one of the first things I did when I got home. It didnt work. I also uninstalled and reinstalled and it still doesnt work.

I even uninstalled all the recent apps I put in the 'puter an still nothing.

At this point I have tried everything feasibly possible. I use ps so much that it actually hurts to not be able to use it! :(

This all happened quite suddently so I am pretty confused. There seems to be no answers on the web about this or a fix.

I will try the intelipoint install to see if that works.

thanks again folks!

Here's an update: I had v5.3 of inteelipoint on my pc so that wasnt it. Still crashing! Shoot! I think I'm gonna have to go back to CS2

Another Update:

So apparently I am able to open a pic one at a time. However, if I try to open two or more, the bastard app crashes!

Not sure if this is vital information or not but that's where I am.

Still in search of an answer. Will report back if I get any, tho doubtful.

I think i would format and reinstall Windows. I actually just gad to do that on a brand new machine to resolve CS3 crashes.

Dos your system meet the minimum system requirements?
Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise
512 MB recommended
1 GB of available hard-disk space (additional free space required during installation)
1024 x 768 monitor resolution with 16-bit video card
DVD-ROM drive
QuickTime 7.1 software required for mulitmedia features
Internet or phone connection required for product activation
Broadband Internet connection required for Adobe Stock Photos and other services
Have you followed adobes troubleshooting steps?

Adobe Photoshop troubleshooting.

Yeah meets all the requirements. CS3 has been working for months without a hickup and then all of a sudden decided to screw me over and start crashing every time I wanna open a pic.

I would format my drive but what a pain! It's a dell so I would have to go back to default settings with a format. Got loads of work stuff on the puter too.

Kavern, I checked out the troubleshooting stuff and I seem to be okay on all fronts. There doesnt seem to be an answer for why this is happening.

Just a thought, but does CS3 still ask for a scratch disk different than the install location, a la earlier versions? Is there an option for allocation of virtual memory resources in the preferences? Maybe you could download Process Explorer (now a Micro$oft goodie, but still free), and see if there are any services that might be conflicting or using up too much pagefile (Logitech webcam software is notorious in this regard).

Cool. Will check it out & report back. I dont think so on the first question.

Interesting/ How does it work? Can it troubleshoot? Should I open CS3 and then look at it?

It's the Windows Task Manager on steroids. It won't troubleshoot per se, but you can view fairly detailed information regarding the processes that you have running, including .dll trees. It won't help solve the problem on its' own, but it will be a valuable tool in trying to correct the issue you're having.
