I'm upgrading from a Pentax Ist DS and am trying to decide between the Canon 40D and the Nikon D300. I'm leaning towards the Nikon with a 18 - 200 VR lens. Any thoughts from Canon and Nikon users? |

I asked almost the same question here.
I'm thinking that I'll wait to see how the D300 looks at high ISO.
I really like the idea of 51pt AF and the 100% viewfinder, not to mention all the other stuff |

In the World According to Slippy, it's midnight at high noon. Live with it.

This sounds good - unless like most people you turn all the focus points 'off' except the central one.
At that point it doesn't much matter whether you are shutting off an additional 8 points (Canon), or an additional 50 points (Nikon) . . you are still just using one :- ) |

If the D300 is a true evolution of the D200 as it appears to be, I have to vote for the D300. I am absolutely ga-ga over my D200. I would however, maybe consider a different lens. I've not yet seen anything from real users to justify it's cost for image quality. Maybe look (very seriously) at the 70-200 f/2.8, it's about as good as you can get in that range.
OR.. you could try and pick up a D200 for a good price and put your money towards pro-grade glass. |

High-ISO stuff, non-official of course.

Do people really ever use more than one focus point? And is anyone really fast & coordinated enough to change the focus point away from centre on the fly?

I think the new 8-way controller might help with that a little ;)

These cameras have automatic focus tracking mode for sports/wildlife shooting; in that mode, the more focus points the better the results. Also useful on a tripod setup, where you can select precisely the focal point you desire within the composition.

Ooh, that makes me think.... there's an 8-way controller on the back of the 40D, I wonder if I can move the focus point with that, hmmm. Something to check out.

Sometimes just to go crazy I swap from the central point to one of the other ones - it stops them getting dusty :- )
Then I feel guilty and go back to the central one . . .
Using them all at once would be mad, mad I tell you . . (led away struggling)

That sounds like something I'd like. It's tough to track a bird and keep it in focus with just the centre point in servo mode. I try every once in a while before giving up. :-(

LOL! Next thing you know, one of your focus points will be boiling your pet rabbit. ;-)

:- o
Makes you wonder though - what do they get up to if you're not using them ? ?
Probably best to keep on the right side of them and use them all occasionally :- )

Well, not exactly. One problem is that the existing Canon focus points are frequently not where I need them to be, even if I only want to use one point, with Canon, there are only 9 chances to have one where I want it, with the Nikon, there would be 51.
I rarely, if ever use only the central point, rather I'm trying to find one that's closest to where I want it or I just have them all on. |

Yes, the 8-way controller can be used to select the focus point.

Wouldn't it be a cool feature if you could have a user defined focus point that you steered into place with the little joystick (as well as the preset ones) ?
How flexible would that be ? |

well concerning focus points , i think this is so usefull, i use the 5 points i have on my D50, i know i know no where close to the D300, but depending on the situation i wish i had more of these, and nikon did just that put more focus points on that camera, so now i ahve to start saving for it. |

Or one that you could move around with your eyeball, simply by looking at the subject.
