OK so I've been bored tonight and have been going through some old stuff and re-editing and such and I came across the second nude photo session I ever did. Was going for a sort of retro thing, never really did anything with any of the photos but put one in a challenge that did badly. That was just a from the back photo as I was still uncomfterable identifying myself as someone who takes nude photos (strange I know, hey I was only 19!) So now I was going through them and kind of liked the mood in one of them and went and showed some people I know and all I seemed to get was "I dunno, she's not really built for nude modeling" and comments in that direction - like I was being mean to her showing her imperfections.
I realize the photo is nothing special, just something that drew me to it, but what do you think - do you down rate imperfect people in challenges? feel sorry for them?
This is the photo I mean - just so you see I'm not speaking of some monster just a normal girl...

I think the key to posing the "normal" nude is trying to make her look as special as possible. Your image is lovely and showcases this woman's natural form well, however, the reaction you've felt was probably due to the fact that you did nothing to make her look special. Something as simple as stretching the arms upward to elongate the mid-section might have made her look like a supermodel. She is NOT a big woman, I think she's very cute.... with a little posing practice you could make her look amazing just the way she is.

| idnic - I agree I didn't direct at all in that shoot and was very nervus. But as I went through it now something about it just made me fall for it. Maybe it's because I've been studying vintage nude photography and the women actually look normal there. I feel that she doesn't HAVE to streach her arms and look like a super model, I like that she has a belly and looks absulutly relaxed and comfy...however the pic has loads of flaws, not even 100% in focus but I luv the model in it and frankly people have said eww when they saw it :S:S just makes me think...wow how sick is this world...she's not even chubby...! |

'Normal' people make better subjects than some stereotypical form, as it appears on so many magazine covers. If you want to sell something external to your model herself (who she is), a cover girl look would be the ticket. If you want to portrait 'humanity', 'normal' folks have the advantage.
'Imperfection', hell, what's that, if not precisely that which makes us human.
If you had to photograph a piece of wood or a stone, would you not prefer a gnarled conifer with an ingrown pebble to a polished opal? |
