I was looking over my camera, set it on the desk, then rotated the chair to grab something. Out of sight, the shoulder strap hangs on the chair's arm rest, throwing the camera into the floor.

I picked it up, turned the switch on/off, it was dead. I looked over the camera, no scratches, looked at the lens, found a piece missing.

I grabbed the flashlight and started a meticulously search of the floor. I found the AF/MF switch under a pair of shoes nearby. One of the four plastic braces snapped out of place.

I took the switch, put it back on the lens - my Sigma 10-20mm. I moved the switch, seemed okay. I took the lens off, checked the connections, put it back on.

It felt rough. Something was wrong. The lens didn't slide cleanly. I looked it over. Turned camera on. It came to life. I took two photos. They looked okay on the LCD.

I felt something was still wrong. I looked at the AF/MF switch again.

It looked odd. I removed the lens. Tried to adjust the switch. It didn't budge. I looked closely. The plastic housing is broken.

Just my luck: 23 months after buying my camera, I drop it for the first time and snap the housing on the lens. Fortunately it wasn't a Canon L lens, but I'm disappointed nevertheless. Wasn't it supposed to be stronger? There's an open fissure on the housing. It's no longer water-resistant. Bummer. I can't go out in the rain anymore.

Looking at pictures of the lens, I noticed one screw is slightly out of place. I suspect this is the culprit that's causing the rough sliding. Unfortunately, I don't have any tools here to try to screw it back in.

What I don't understand is how that part of the lens got damaged. It lies near the part of the camera that protrudes out over the lens... and there's not a scratch anywhere else. Freak accident?

Do you have contents insurance as I recently dropped my camera, and my imsurance covered the repairs.

I didn't know that the sigma 10-20 was weather sealed, I didn't even know that the 20d was sealed. I thought it was just the eos-1x series and some of the L lenses that were sealed.

Hey Sherryl, is this part of one's homeowner's insurance? Or a completely separate policy?

The 40D has weather sealing, particularly around the battery and CF card covers.

I've been out in raining weather, and nothing got in. I wouldn't call it "sealed", but the lens was good before.

Ohhh I know how you feel... I just posted earlier how I had dropped my camera when it was only a few weeks old! It was a night shoot as I put my camera and a few other bits and pieces away under a street light I then picked up my camera back pack and thump tinkle tinkle. Arrrgggg

The tinkles were my filters and my D70 well it simply bounced and didn't have a scratch from the concrete pavement! Phew

Then only this morning while tilting my camera to 90 deg on the tripod my camera fell off the quick release, I must not have put it in properly but again it simply bounced along with the SB 800 flash unit. Phew.

Maybe that screw was already loose and the force made it pop over one thread? Hope that's all it is. Good Luck!

I have a policy with State Farm. Unfortunately I'm in Italy until December, so I can't do anything about it until I return. It would be nice if they paid for a full replacement. I'm never excited about repairs on electronics, although this is mostly body work.

Wow! Do you have insurance? I recommend it... ;-)

It's possible. I'm going out tomorrow to buy a set of screwdrivers to see if I can move it back in. I put the lens on/off a few times and noticed a slight scratch on the metal on the camera's side. It's definitely the screw in question.

In twelve months I had two accidents with my camera and lenses. The first my zoom lens wasn't connected properly, and more than 15 feet, fell off over my back verandah and broke, and was peplaced by insurance except for the $50.00 excess.

Ten months later when I fell and broke my back, my camera also fell and the flash was damaged, and once again they repaired it, less the excess fee.

I would report it to your insurance and see what they say.

Canon USA are calling the eos40d "rugged" while the eos1x are "sealed from water and dust"

Anyways I wouldn't run around in the rain with a eos 20d (or a 40d) even with a whole lens.

I added the Camera & Lens to my Home & Contents insurance. There is no extra charge as far as I know they just want to have unusual things over $1k itemised.
