Any chance of a panorama special challenge? No need for major rule changes, just run under advanced with special override rule to allow stitching. Go on...you know you want to ;)

Nice idea. I think this would be a good one and would let people explore another avenue of their ability.

Only thing is the image size might be a bit short on one side for a panorama.

You could have a special maximum horizonal size (larger than 720 under Advanced) for the purposes of this one challenge. The problem is displaying it for the majority of users, and I think that 1024 is still the average desktop resolution - which wouldn't really be enough to do any of them justice. Could work with a horizontal scrollbar though, but that's more coding effort and NotStraightforward™ ;)

Would it have to actually be a stitched panorama or would a single image be okay if the aspect ratio is specified?

I like trying tyo get panoramic images with just one shot.

This is one image and I have it blown up to 36" and it's less than 16" high....so if you did like a 2:1 or less......

Sounds like a fun challenge. Would have to limit it to 10 images to stay within DPC current rules.

I wouldn't make it mandatory for combining more than one image. As Jeb just mentioned, it could be done with one image sized to the correct ratio. Maybe make the ratio a special rule?

As for Expert Editing; why ruin it with crazy stuff? Just run it under the Advanced ruleset.

My 2cents. :-)

This is not the best pano but a good enough example to state that this idea would be great if you had a 800px max/min rule. Otherwise I think the whole idea gets pretty watered down.

This might be 16-19 images (maybe more...don't recall).

Could be a nightmare for the SC to verify the winners. I wouldn't want to do a pano with image limits because that could kill the quality of the whole thing.

Technically, is there a specific ratio for Panoramics? I've looked around and I'm seeing a wide variance.

Even this is technically called a Panoramic image:

I like the idea.

This is 4-5 pictures, stitched together with some HP software that came with my printer. Roughly a 4:1 crop here. Hangs on my wall cropped to fit a 36x12 frame.

FWIW, when we discussed adding multiple-capture techniques to Advanced, we talked about panos, and agreed that they would be used for special challenges. I'd say it's a virtual certainty that we'll see challenges involving panos at some point. :-)

Can we wait till spring time so i can get back to unfrozen waterfalls? ;)

three rule modifications are needed for panos (imo)
720x720 should be modified to maximum of H+V=1440 (& keep the 200k )
allow stretching/warping
allow multiple images of not the same scene

I think 1440 might be too wide for general users (but Langdon will no doubt have the data from the webserver) without having to scroll the images in the web browser.

I run at 1280 x 1024, but typically people in general use 1024 x 768 (whereas a few years ago it was more like 800x600 default). Perhaps 1000 as a maximum H length might be more appropriate - approx 30% wider than Advanced and should fit the vast majority of user screen res. No idea for vertical... 400?

There would probably (need to) be some modification of the allowable size for such a challenge, but no discussion has taken place on specifics. A variant of the "H+V" formula might make sense if it's simple enough. Doing H+V<=1440 and leaving the 160px minimum in place would yield 1280Wx160H as the widest image, and 160Wx1280H as the tallest. I highly doubt that anyone would use such radical ratios, however.
In any case, it's all just conjecture until it gets officially discussed.

I have an awesome pano of the mountain ranges over Jasper Canada with only a couple tiny clouds in it :) its was taken with my XTi last year and its 27 pics stiched :P I had some guys at a trade show attempt to print it on a large format printer they were demoing they pretty much opened the file and hit print without any resizing so its pretty much actual 10mp size right from the camera, the paper was about 36" wide and the photo started at about 28" wide and they shut it down after it was just barely over half done at about 12 feet LOL even with only half printed looks fricken awesome :) Ill try to post a smaller version tonight ;)

I like the idea of doing a pano challenge... I wish we could do panos for regular advanced editing challenges - I would think that would be more useful for using multiple images than time lapse would be

understood - just advocating ;)
highest ratio i've done is 1:6 but most (~95%) are 1:3 (though my best seller is 1:5 ;)

of course it all depends on the subject ...

I was going to suggest this very topic myself,

I understand the technical difficulties it would create for the web server people, but I'm sure it would produce some stunning images.

I guess it won't be an open challenge though?

The size of a pano would not be a problem if they allowed linking rather than required the images be uploaded. Then there would not be a load issue at all and the only impact would be on those with modem speeds and small monitors.
