So i got to give my 40D a workout on Saturday night and take a look at a few images. NICE!IQ is right up there with the 5D and 1D mk3, noise is a bit more than them at 3200 but much better than the 30D.
Focus? TONS better than a 20D or 30D and worth the upgrade for this alone! It's faster and with all cross sensors no more focus and recompose nonsense - end result is fewer missed moments. As fast/accurate as the 1D models I've played with and better than the 5D.

Here are some 'real world' images.
RAW caps converted in DPP to JPG.
Faithful picture style, +1 contrast, +1 saturation, +1 color tone (less red) and 3 sharpness
CS3 USM 200%, .3, 3
resized as you see here
USM 70$, .7, 3
No other adjustments - no curves, no nuthin!
Here is an ISO3200 shot (17-55 2.8 IS lens at 17mm, 1/40 at 2.8) I work in dark places as this was with all the hall lights all the way up!

IQ? Nice!
17-55 2.8 IS at 55mm, F4@ 1/80 at ISO800, no flash

Same girls and pose outdoors now.
70-200 2.8 IS at 73mm, F4@ 1/800(if i recall correctly) ISO 100

Highight Tone priority is a great thing!

Check my profile dude - not a rookie here. PBase may be having issues, i know it was slow for me. I guess lots of people are looking for real work 40D images instead of just test shots of bookcases and such.

maybe change the IMG tags to URL tags... they worked when I copied the url (from a quote) and went straight to the image.

I couldn't get any of the links or addresses to load by any method.

They are all working fine from here. When I click on the link in this post my browser opens a new window and displays the image. Weird, eh?

Following your 'links' I get the "You don't have permission to access <address>. Access is Forbidden.

When I copy the text and paste, I get a server error page saying 'Access is denied on this server.'

Hmm...

EDIT: Just for giggles, placed cursor in middle of text link in OP, right click and view image and image shows and then when I return to thread, image is in post. Once for each link and all images now show. Strange.

I can't view the images, but regarding the review - I'd like to see the side by sides you took with the 5D and 1D bodies so I can judge for myself which aspects are as good and/or surpass those cameras.

It appears that Pbase isn't fond of hotlinking of any type.

What is IQ? in the OP?

thanks...had a feeling it was something simple i was missing.
09/10/2007 03:04:19 PM · #14
I get forbidden too.
09/10/2007 03:09:19 PM · #15
Well I know it's an odd approach - but if you click on the link and get forbidden - highlight the pbase address in your browser address bar and hit return (or go) and it opens the picture for you.

Alternatively wait long enough and the images finally open on this thread anyway : )

They look impressive - do you have any fullsize ones on Pbase ? or 100% crops ?

Drag and drop the URL in to your browser bar (which also causes them to appear next tim you view the thread)

Prof - the ROOKIE was purely sarcasm.

Or if you rightclick on the file name in the original post and click "VIEW IMAGE" they come right up. Oddly enough - those crazy titles -the obi.39523. is an image itself.

Don't know the what the deal with PBase is...used the typical paste image on DPC...did this in last week or two and had no issues.
I have some images on another site and they made changes, those images had issues here too...makes me think it's DPC!

Lets try this one... i logged out of pbase and then got the link...seeif it works any better.

85 1.8 at F2 ISO400

or using DPC 'link' insert
ISO400 image

I didn't take any images side by side. My second shooter didn't come on this gig, but has done 5 or 6 weddings with me this year. He gives me RAW and I process them so I've seen lots of 5D and 1D mk3 images and they have a smoothness (for lack of a better word) that the 30D lacks. The 40D seems to have that same quality.

if you right click on that ^ and click VIEW IMAGE, it works.

Glad you like the camera Chris.

P.S. What's the dark line in the 3rd shot across the arm of the girl on the left?

Just looked at the what's new. Looks awesome. Can't wait. (But shall have to - for another month!)

Howdy! :)

Perhaps try a different method of hotlinking.

So if this is the page to your photo
//www.pbase.com/cpphotography/image/85335217

This would be the direct link to the original size:
//www.pbase.com/cpphotography/image/85335217/original.jpg

Medium
//www.pbase.com/cpphotography/image/85335217/medium.jpg

Small

Here is a real world image that I didn't want to see :-(

Dust bunnies in my brand new 40D !!!!

I ran the on-board cleaning cycle several times, plus tried blowing them out - all the ones that are left, seem to be stuck there good and proper :-(

What should I do? Should I just live with it and clean it, or should I attempt to get them to clean it?
Who is "them" anyway? Ritz.com (where I bought it) or Canon?

On a related note, an interesting comparison between the 5D and the 40D here...
5D vs 40D
