I'm new to the site. With the zodiac challenge, the description lists zodiac signs. Are we restricted to just these, or can we venture outside these but keep with the zodiac theme?
01/21/2004 09:00:59 PM · #2
As long as you keep within the zodiac theme it should be fine, but some voters will vote on if it represents a certain sign or not.

May be easier to pick on and find a good shot. Good luck.

Thanks!
I was thinking along the lines of Chinese Zodiac signs (hate to give that away, but oh well). But I see your point, and that is the reason I inquired about it. I may give it a shot anyway, just to get used to the voters too. Thanks for the feedback!

I'm sure the chinese wont mind.

Yeah, I don't mind. I believe that they want to keep it within the monthly zodiac.

Granted it would be very easy to capture the Chinese zodiac especially the monkey because it's actually the Chinese New Year already depending on the timezone.

Happy New Year. Good time to go to your local Chinatown and get some colorful shots.

I guess I should go ahead stay within the confines of the rules. But this is the picture I really wanted to submit. Maybe you guys can give me some feedback on it. I think it is a pretty good picture.

I'll think up something else for the challenge. Better anyway, this was too easy for me.

Ok, preview didn't work.

Does this work?

Brett:

Nice shot, needs a little more focus on the Dragon, but great idea. Unfortunately, I think you'd get killed in the voting, as I've only been here a couple weeks, but, my impression is that as free thinking creative types go, some of the voters are pretty literal thinkers, and the rules say Leo, Pieces, etc.....as for me, I'd vote high, but then crank on you for having the wrong year.

If it is any consolation though, the fireworks in Hong Kong are Friday night. I was thinking of taking my son's Curious George and doing something with the fireworks, HK skyline, and good old George the monkey. Like you, I need a new idea.

In short, I think the challenge is stated in a slightly limiting non-global way, but, rules are rules, and these guys seem great about enforcing them, so, their bat, their ball...and it is a fun game.

Best and good luck,
Bill

yes this challenge is awfully western-centric & names the monthly zodiacs. I imagine folks will be voted down for submitting shots that represent the chinese zodiac since it is not a part of the theme. Too bad, really.

Meeting the challenge head-on isn't part of the rules, so we won't do anything to punish you for this. The voters, on the other hand, might have their way with you, as it does say "representing one of these signs" referring to the list of 12 monthly signs.

I saw your picture of the dragon. It´s raising picture. Welcome to DPC!
If you are interested in a serious critique about it... read the next part.

I like so much of the shadows projected in the wall, but both, shadow and real dragon in the same picture is not so good. Try to get other angle, or setup a light source behind the dragon, pointing to the wall to smooth the shadow or blows out it, or simply shoot only the shadow. I like the principal light source you had used, but the botton of the dragon needs a bit more light. Try to improve it, only changing a point of view that reveal more details of the botton, or change your light source position/angle. The focus issue, are remembered by bill_hk2002. Try to improve it. I can sugest a shallow DOF to cut out some wall texture, but I don´t think your camera can control DOF very well. And the wall texture adds a bit to the picture. Nice idea. If you try another shot, let me know.

Lets read again:
Challenge Details: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. Take your best photo representing one of these signs.

Can somebody read here monkey or dracon!?
And during challenge everybody comments like: it is not zodiac!

GoodEnd and bill hk,
Thank you for the critique. I will try taking another shot of it and will post the new link. I did play around with lighting quite a bit, this is actually picture number 32! I guess I sold myself short once I finally got something that I liked. I really don't care about a score, just the critique. But, I really don't want all my critique to be about how I didn't follow the rules.

And thanks kinks. Don't mean to be rude, but I can read, and I can think outside the box as well. Every challenge I have seen so far, there are always those who venture off from what the "literal" rules say and get a little more creative with the overall theme. In my opinion, that is what we are supposed to accomplish here, creativity.

Thanks to all for the feedback!

Sry, if it sounded like a lesson.
Creativity is most important! And as long it is challenge for digital pictures, here are many ways to go. I hope you dont mind if i will use digital creativity on this time.

Brett, Kinks point is valid and being new here, you may not have seen that yet. Unfortunately, thinking outside the box around here generally does not yield high scores. If I had a dollar for every thread complaining about how a shot on the edge of a topic was misunderstood and the viewers must not 'get it'...

So while you are correct that you are not required to shoot one of the listed signs of the zodiac, you had best be prepared for all of the 'does not meet the challenge' comments.

Good luck,

Pedro

I have to agree with Pedro. My picture for the road sign challenge was a little out the box and is scoring low because of it. I don't think people "get it"
01/22/2004 11:01:00 AM · #18
I totally understand what she is saying, that's the reason I just decided to submit the picture here on the forum and get some feedback from you guys. And I am going to try to meet the challenge with one of the listed subjects.

A score or winning isn't really why I joined though. I joined so that that I could learn to hone my skills, learn my "eye," learn new ideas from the other submittals and take pictures of subjects I wouldn't normally look twice at (all the more reason to to take a picture of one of the listed subjects).

To kinks,
My intent wasn't to be rude. And I vote on how well someone meets the challenge/ theme too (along with creativeness). I was honestly trying to make it easy on myself by using that dragon, I already had it, and it was in a controlled environment, AND I like the picture. But I came here to challenge myself, so that's what I need to do.

When time passes by you get experience, that in essence the key to sucess. I had noticed that you need to comply with the Common Sense here. If you really wants to make a photo "out of the box", fell free to it in home, and share it to us in a forum thread. Expose your work on a galery or other sharing method. But here, the challenge matter. If almost 300 people submit to a challenge and all these are in theme, only 3 will get the ribon, thought what happen to those that think out of box?
My current challenge entry, has a bit improvement of art... so bad votting is that I expect.
In DPC, you need to be able to get the theme, it is like a photojournalist. You can improve the view point, the looking of image, but can´t change the fact itself.
01/22/2004 12:49:15 PM · #24
Thinking out of the box won't necessarily win you ribbons, but it isn't neccessarily useless either. I try to keep an open mind because I find I learn the most from the pictures that are different. Conform and you get the approval of the majority, do your own thing and maybe inspire a few or just one. There is value in both.
