i just read something about the d70 coming out soon and for $999.oo. i just spent $1500.oo last night for the d100. is my d100 obsolete now?

I can't say I know anything about the d70 in specific, but I'd imagine it'll be a similar situation to the Canon 300d, even if the hardware of the lower end model is just as capable, some features will be disabled in order to maintain a market for the more expensive model. So unless the d100 is being continued and the d70 is completely replacing it, your d100 will probably still be superior to the d70. Whether it's $500 superior is another question.

You could return it, and check out the other and then decide?

the d70 is supposed to be a budget version of the d100 to compete with the 300d just like cannon made that as a cheaper version of the 10d id keep what you got its a very nice camera

No! You had a value camera, better than D70. Nikon had a tradition to create fine cameras. D70 will not be so budget as Canon EOS 300D is in relation to Canon 10D. But Nikon D100 sure will be keept in top of D70. New lens will come, but are for booth. Congratulations to get a splendid camera!

I really like my D100. It takes great quality shots and is easy to work with. I think you made the right choice! (of course I am biased).

sorry to say this and dont be mad, but.... is it really all that important to you if the D100 is discontinued??? The camera will still work...right??? I bought a used D60 when people were unloading them to get a 10D, so I got a better price than a new D60 and better than the New 10D, the new features in the 10D were NOT important to ME to other people im sure the new features were important, but not for ME.

Then to 10D people had a slew of problems (well a few problems not a lot) and some had to return several cameras, get firm ware updates and so on.

I think its funny seeing all these post about buying a camera then a new model just came out, and people frantically wanting to trade it in for the new model. heck if this was the new car market the car manfacturers would love it. Im sure the camera people love it also.

Its best to compare the features of the cameras, see if the features really make that much difference to YOU , not what other people whant you to have.

Im sure what ever decision you make will be the right choice for you.

Same thing with Photoshop 7. When Photoshop CS came out I was able to buy a used copy of PS7 cheap :)

I have to agree with jab119. If you're trading up from your Sony you will notice a world of difference. Worrying about the difference between the D100 and D70 isn't worth it.

Oh, and I'm biased as well ;)

BTW - I bought my D100 over a year ago when they were retailing for $2000, but I've got a year's worth of great great photos that I couldn't have got with another year using my old Olympus, so I'm not disappointed at all by falling prices. My 2003 work is worth more to me than $500 or even $1000. And even more than that, my lenses are worth more than the camera body anyway !

If you were to wait, that would just be that much more time you'd be wishing you had a camera than you would have shooting with the one you have. Right now, until you can actually buy one, the D70 is not reality, the D100 that is in your hands is real.

I bought a D60 about 1 month before the 10D was announced (at about $1000 less than I paid for the D60) but 10D's didn't appear for about another 9 months after that - and I got some great shots and learned loads in that time. Enjoy the camera you've got.

I highly doubt it. If you do, PLEASE let me know so I can go pick one or two up.

My partner bought a Nikon D100 over a year ago, and it has given some great shots. Although I will never change from Canon, I appreciate the solid build and great features of the D100. I think you have a great camera. The Canon 300D is not quite the equal of the 10D. I am sure Nikon won't tolerate their D70 stealing too many sales from their D100. Enjoy your premier camera!
