That's just lame.

Yeah, it's sad that the old guys can't walk (lame), but we believe it makes them better engineers ;-)

Accept that Nikon currently don't make their own sensors, they use Sony sensors in their current dSLR cameras.

I can't remember where I read it, but Nikon don't have the tech to do their own chip fabrication, although they obviously collaborate very closely with Sony on the sensor designs for their gear.

One article about that:

//www.dpreview.com/news/0409/04091701nikond2xsony.asp

And to state the obvious broken record message...

Nikon and Canon both make some great cameras, and the debate can rage for ages on who makes the 'best' tool for the job, whatever the job may be. Once you've got a dSLR and decent glass the brand matters very little, it's the two legged mounting and aiming system that makes all the difference.

Actually they do. But you'd better get the hell off their lawn!!!!

The D2Hs actually does have a Nikon Sensor.

Nikon makes the optical parts of the machines that make the Sony sensors....
D2h has a Nikon sensor, but don't know if they make it themselves or have outsourced the production.

14bit colour RAW alone puts it above the D200 :)

14bit colour RAW alone puts it above the D200 :)

But is it really significant in the end?

I mean on the paper, yes it will make a difference? What about the reality?

Technically it should be, contributing 4 times as many shades of color, especially helping in the shadows where definition is worst to begin with.

Still, I understand your point - gotta wait to see the test images. Unfortunately, I can't say that I'll be getting one (gotta upgrade lenses first), so you'll get no word from me! =)

MF digital are 14 bit so it's safe to assume, I think, that you should see nicer tonal transitions.
Hasn't the MKIII been out awhile so there should be some samples to compare the transition to the MKII.

More rumors

First off, Nikon will be bringing us a full frame D3X at 16MP and 9 frames per second. The D3X has a crop mode to DX-size at 12MP and 11 frames per second (that would make it industry leader).

Next the Nikon D300 will be 12MP (with a DX sensor) at 6 frames per second. The optional battery grip will boost the shooting rate to 8 frames per second (again, class leader).

Reportedly, both cameras will operate at ISO 200-6400.

Finally, five new lenses are in store for Nikonians. They are as follows:

* 14-24mm f/2.8 G AF-S
* 24-70mm f/2.8 G AF-S
* 400mm f/2.8 G AF-S VR
* 500mm f/4 G AF-S VR
* 600mm f/4 G AF-S VR

I think the two new Nikon cameras are going to be revealed soon!

ISO 200 is surprising though!

Yes, ISO 200 seems odd... If ISO 200 is the lower limit, and with the 11 fps, it seems they're really going after sports photogs. Personally I'd take lower noise and 14-bit ADC over high fps pretty much any day of the week.

This link says, "the scoop from a Japanese blog".
If this is the same asian rumormonger that our beloved friend Ken RockDawg is quoting on his rumor page, then this might not be very accurate.
Ken doesn't give this rumor much clout as the source mentions a new CCD chip made by Nikon which would be a new precedent as they don't make their own chips.
It also wouldn't jive w/ the Sony announcement.
Makes sense to me.

I do not believe the 200 ISO, not after the 100 ISO on the D-200 was so well accepted. You would think they would push for even lower like 80 on the next model.

Will be interesting to see what direction they are headed. I hope it is up. Because at this stage in the game. I have far too much money invested in Nikon Glass to jump ship. And I just ordered another one this morning. 17-55 2.8 should get here Monday, I am already in love with this lens. I will probably be drooling when I open the box.

oh man, I want that lens bad. I'll probably settle for the Tamron 17-50 though.

17-55 2.8

A superb lens that hurts quite a bit your wallet! Congratulations

I am glad that with the exception of one lens, the 18/70 ED DX, all my lenses will work with full frame Nikons. I hope that the new bodies will work with the older AI non cpu lenses. The S3 Fuji that I use now works great with them, except that I have to shoot all manual and without metering, which I don't mind, as I have instant readout with the LCD and histograms and "blinkies".
A lot of people who want to upgrade to full frame may be in a tight for full frame lenses if they have been buying the DX lenses for 2/3 sensor size cameras.
The 200 iso may not be a problem with the full frame sensor, as it has more area to gather light, making it more efficent in that regard.

A bigger sensor does nothing for exposure.
ISO 200 on FF has the same limitations as ISO 200 on APS.
I want super shallow DOF in bright light without motion blur... f/1.4 at ISO200 might make me use a longer than wanted shutter. If I had ISO 50 I'm all good w/o use of NG filters.

I also read a rumor somewhere that the FF nikon would have a "Crop" feature that would allow you to use DX lenses essentially making the FF sensor APC-S size when a DX lens is attached.
Hopefully we'll soon find out.

OMG!

PopSCI published an embargoed article early, but Technorati has the intro still.

Full frickin frame.

Linky

Combined with the Sony sensor info, this is looking pretty happy :) Not that I'll be able to afford any of it. But this means a lot of D200's are going to be dropped on the FM forums :D
