I have to say that I have never been much impressed by the upgrade Canon 20D -> 30D and not really interested in the 5D (way too expensive for what it really is, the specs except for the FF sensor were also not completely attractive for that amount of money spent)...

Now the dices are rolled...Canon is going to strike very strongly in the market with the new 40D. The specifications / price ratio is surprisingly very large. The specifications are well above the D200's and now Nikon must respond very quicky if they want to be in the same league. Canon pushed very hard on that one...

What should we expect? A new D300 with a FF sensor for 1500-1700 $

There is something in the near future. Nikon isn't sitting around waiting to see what Canon is going to do next. They are constantly developing new prototypes and testing the snot of them to make sure they have a product that isn't going to sink. I reckon a D-300 or DX3 maybe both will be announced soon.

From what I hear (I don't recall where) it's highly likely both will be announced at the same time.

I went to my dealer to order a D200 - they said they haven't been able to get them for 2 months. And Nikon has told them that there will be no more manufactured.

They are thinking D300 and D3x too.

My concern now that I'm ready to upgrade is how long will the pipeline take to fill up with the new cameras?

Dealer also said there's many of the lenses have become completely scarce too - like the 105mm - wonder what's up there too...

I heard the same thing the other day at one of the big camera stores in Milwaukee. He said they haven't been able to stock the D-200 for over 2 months and have had an shipment on backorder for that long. The store has had to turn away lot of customers because of it. Ironically they had a shelf full of 18-200 VR's Which prior to the D-200 shortage was the item on backorder for months.

The specs are good--especially for approx. $1300--but I wouldn't say the camera is "well above" the D200.

Edit for grammar.

I imagine this technology might be integral to the new offerings:

Nikon's new full-color RGB sensor

I full size sensor with three CCDs. If each sensor is even just 6 MP that would be one heck of an image that is produced. (Not sure what the regular sensor equivalent would be but just a guess I would say between 15 and 20 if not higher...can't quite get my head around the math.)

Maybe this will ease things a bit for you.

Not to burst your bubble on how cool this sensor could be (it would be very cool - FOVEON-like) but according to DPReview this was filed in 2003 which isn't really "new".
Still interesting.

Very interesting... press release "happens" to coincide with the Canon announcements.
Wonder how much better the noise characteristics are.
12 bit and APS-C size is disappointing though.

And you bought them ALL for your friends on DPC right?

More than likely a D3H would be first. If they follow their past numbering schemes. The D200 will spawn the D200s next. Nikon moves at it's own pace and doesn't always feel the need to try and cover Canons' moves. They don't have the resources to play that game. I think we're gonna see within a year a 1.1 crop factor sensor from Nikon with noise characteristics that will know your socks off.

Nope, and unless Nikon are blind and deaf, they've heard from every corner of the planet that the game is changing. D3h numbering will signify something less to the community as a whole than D3x or even D3.

allright the way i see it,

nikon takes the market with the D200, D80, D40 and D40x, and canon delays it's production for the 40D and D1s till now in order to make some impact and get back a share of the market.

canon IS trying to catch up with nikon, and i have no doubt that whatever nikon is brewing is going to be nothing short of impressive:)

Whatever they have up their sleeves, I don't think it will be a FF sensor. I seem to recall Nikon swearing they were never going there.

lol No, But I wish I had that kind of cash to toss around. That lens seems to be cooled off a little now. I found a bunch of them in the stores when I went lens hunting a couple of weeks ago the 17-55 has become a tough lens to locate in the shops however.

maybe not a FF sensor but i would not mind a 1.35 or a 1.1 crop factor:)

I don't see how any competitor can be in a position of playing catch-up to a company with inventory problems like Nikon.

There are plenty of reasons people by one brand over another. I know that I'm not alone in that given two pretty similiar products, I will buy the one I don't have to wait 3 months to receive.

Nikon wants to be king of the hill, they need to scale up.

simply put people want their product, that's why they are out of stock, that should tell you something :)

Wasn't Nikon coming up with a new *almost* full frame sensor? (You can tell how technically savvy I am).
