A Mothers Journey

Despite the warning I was compelled to look, only thing I can come up with is heart wrenching to the extreme.

I SO wish I hadn't viewed this right now - TEARS!

My children have JUST walked out the door for there first sleepover EVER - and after watching that I am almost inconsoluable.

How amazing for that photographer to have access to the family at such a time and how impressively and sensitively she treated their story - WOW!

Thanks for sharing...tears..........

Wow... Really gives a humbling perspective on all the things in life we take for granted.

That was a beautiful tribute to a brave and noble young man; his amazing mother and family.

Thank you for sharing that, it brought back some tough but also great memories of my mother.

I was moved to tears. It's also makes me appreciate that I have healthy children. I cant imagine loosing one of them.

Without shame, I can say I cried. Too many of my own family and friends have been taken by cancer. They too fought the good fight and thought they had won only to have the cancer come back and take them.

On another note: When I viewed these photographs one part of me wished I could evoke such a strong emotional response with my photography. The other half was glad I don't.

If that's not the saddest thing I've seen all year, it's damn near close. Beautiful work.

Oh you BIG baby..... They are worth seeing, just to see what life can be like, and definately a true example of a Mothers Love.

It sends goosebumps down my spine.

it is worth seeing, i love the scenes where she is running his wheelchair thru the halls and letting him drive the car, she looks like good, strong mother, but i can imagine no worse fate than to bury your child...

I've seen this before. Very powerful stuff.

Extremely powerful...what a heartbreaking story. I found this video of the photographer learning of her Pulitzer prize, and she talks about the mother and son a bit.

Don't watch this if you don't want to cry. It shows the slide show from the original post.

OMG that is so sad. I am still crying from it all. This touches me in so many ways you have no idea. First of all the bravest person in this story is Derek’s mother Cyndie French. She knows the outcome before it all and still has faith and hope to caring on every day. As the loving caring father that I am I would have such a hard time doing what Cyndie was able to. Usually when I see things like this or other sad things that involve kids I usually get to thinking about what if that was my kid? What if I was in that situation? How would I get help or how would I be able to make it?

I would also like everyone to know that my wife has done the relay for life walk for 2 years now and has risen around to two hundred dollars both times. I also donate to relay for life. As cancer being one of our top killers in the world I ask that we all donate to a charity like this to help out. Even if it was $5, I mean who doesn’t have $5? Everyone could honestly live with out that extra $5. If one million people were to donate a tiny $5 that is 5 million dollars going to these wonderful kids that are trying to stay alive.
