i tried searching for this because I know its been discussed, but i couldn't find it through the many threads.

Where is the best place to buy CS3 and cheapest? Im looking for my brother who is a student so places like academic superstore are fine. Any other good academic places to buy it cheap?

Buying it at the student price is what you'll get the un-pirated version for. Why not just buy from the Adobe site? I don't know what kind of proof they need to be able to buy the student version.

Academic Superstore is where I got mine. Great price and good service. I could not find the student version any cheaper than at academicsuperstore.com.

I don't want to buy it from Adobe because it costs $650. I can get it from Academicsuperstore.com for $299 for the extended version. My brother is a student so he has whatever credentials he needs.

Your local college bookstore should be able to get the academic version for you.

Just as a side-note:

The educational pricing is a bit of a catch-22. As a student, you can purchase it at the lower price -- because you are using it as a learning tool. However, as soon as you graduate, you are supposed to "upgrade" to a non-educational version because now, it's no longer a learning tool.

This is important if you intend to use that educational version for any kind of professional work. For example, selling prints from a site like dpchallenge. (Even if you're still a student.)

Will Adobe go after you if you don't upgrade and you use it professionally? Probably not -- I suspect it depends on the scale of your professional operations. But it is something to be aware of.

not that this worries me in any way, but how would adobe know what I use this for? How would they know if I sell prints or not?

You are also supposed to claim all income on your taxes...

To your first question. There could be something written into the resulting files that includes the serial number you used in registering your copy of Photoshop. This could be easily checked in a database to confirm whether or not the number was an "Academic" version of a "unhindered" version. The other way they could figure this would be to have your software regularly "phone home" to tell them that it is still being used. How many people remain students for more than 8 years, in art?

To your second question. This isn't incredibly likely, unless they feel it is possible that they could garner more money than it would cost to pay someone to check images posted to "for sale" sites.

...and if you don't and subsequently are audited and need to explain how certain things came into your possession and are unable to provide receipts regarding the costs. They will hit you for what they estimate the cost is/was, tack on late-fee penalties and suddenly you are looking at tens of thousands in back taxes, instead of paying a few hundred to a few thousand over a few years.

When you ordered from Academic Superstore, did you do the instant verification where they ask for your SSN# and email address? If so and it was approved, is there anything else you needed to do?

I ordered it yesterday and the email confirmation was kind of confusing.

I called Academic Superstore and asked how I can prove my academic status. I am a middle/high school teacher...

Since there is a picture of me on the school's website, they simply went to the website while I was on the phone with them, approved my academic status and processed the order right then.

This doesn't help you though...
