use the different priority settings on your camera?

Aperture Priority
Shutter Priority
Full Manual
Full Auto aka P&S mode

Aperture Priority - 90% of the time, this is my default setting

Shutter Priority - never

Full Manual - with the AI-S lenses (i.e. I have no choice) or with external flash

Full Auto aka P&S mode - when I'm handing it to someone else to take a photo

Aperture Priority - when DOF is of the most importance to me (85% of time)
Shutter Priority - when stopping or blurring motion is most important(10%)
Full Manual - when using my flash unit (5%)
Full Auto aka P&S mode - never

I almost always use manual because most of the time I don't like the automatic settings when using aperture or shutter priority. i use shutter priority when im doing really fast action though.

i had only manual cameras for many years, and i find the dials and buttons very fiddly on the DSLRs. if they come out with one that's laid out well, i'd probably go fully manual all the time.

I shoot in P Mode - P is for Professional! :D

Okay, seriously - AV mode outdoors when not in controlled light or subjects in motion. Manual in the studio, outdoors under controlled light. EV or manual for long exposures.

Aperture priority - Nearly always.
Shutter priority - When I want a very specific shutter speed, generally a long exposure. (<2%)
Manual - When using an ambient light meter. (<1%)
Full automatic - Never on SLR.

Well, I use P (Program) mode for real, most of the time. It fixes the ISO setting (differentiating it from fully-automatic mode), but lets the camera determine the aperture/speed combination. I'm often shooting in a real hurry, in the car, etc., and don't have time to figure out the right settings, much less get them entered before the moment has passed.

I'll use Av or Tv when needed, like for a shallow DOF macro or sports photography. I mostly use Manual only under special conditions, like pictures of the full Moon, where nothing else works, or is I need a deliberate over- or under-exposure.

Aperture priority 95% of the time.

Shutter priority whenever I'm trying to get creative with a moving subject.

99% of my shooting is hiking in the woods where the lighting conditions change as I'm walking through the trees looking for critters, so manual would be too cumbersome for me. (Although I suppose I should work at getting more comfortable and knowledgeable with manual settings.)

Manual: When I have the time to set things the way I want, and often in a situation where the lighting isn't changing much will leave it there once refined.

Aperture Priority: When I need control over the Depth of Field

Shutter Priority: When I want blurry pictures :P or low-light conditions when I need to be above a certain threshold hand-holding.

P-Mode: Where my camera is left normally, as I never know what or when I need to click and don't have time to fiddle-fart around. Great for candids. P-Mode supports RAW, so there it stays.

Manual: Mostly when using strobes or the flash off camerea, but in some situations when I have time I'll take full control

Aperture: To control DOF. mostly landscape and macro shots, sometimes in low light situations when the cam keeps choosing abouve the available f/2.8 and I want maximum available shutter without underexposing.

Shutter: Speed, distance zoomed shots on cloudy or dusk situations, some low-light(not often), shooting long-lens macro's to steady the shot, dragging the shutter/motion blur and all.

P-mode: when I just don't want to pay attention, fairly good lighting conditions.

In P I'll usually adjust the spot/matrix/center mode of the meter fairly often though, so maybe I'm not really giving it that little attention.

ISO-auto is always off for me. I'll often leave the D200 at 400 though.

Aperture Priority - 60% of the time; also used when I want to control Depth of Field (DOF)/Bokeh

Shutter Priority - 35% of the time; when I need to blur water, waterfalls, moving cars, trains, moon shots, outlining of subjects, night skyline shots, etc.

Manual: 5% of the time; when using a flash (but not always)

P-Mode: never used it

I mostly shoot in Shutter Priority bc I rarely carry a tripod and tend to use heavier lenses.

If DOF is my main focus for a shot then I shoot in aperture priority.

If I have flashes or if lighting is optimal, then I can take full control over my settings.

I never, ever, shoot in full auto bc I rather bypass having to do extra steps in post processing.

Hope this helps..

AP - 80% Default
SP - 15% when handholding the macro lens.
M - 5% when I am going for an "effect" and the meter is going to give me the results I don't want.

Manual Mode - 100%
Auto Focus - 75%
Manual Focus - 25%

Oops..I lied. I use Bulb about 2% so make that Manual 98%.

At today's wedding:
Manual=using my AB strobes, dragging the shutter during the reception.
AV=outside formal shots with a little fill flash (but for some reason my AV doesn't want to work when my 430Ex is on the camera...it is always calling for slow shutter speeds.
So back to manual for most of the shots today. Oh well, I guess it is good for me...I even used a little RAW.

Yes I realise that, but I am referring to the specific modes.

A - Most of the time, for controlling DOF and the likes
S - Very rarely
M - For flash work, night work and IR

Almost always manual.

it's actually more of an open ended shutter speed than a camera mode...
