WinXP can't read Win98 Cds - DPChallenge Forums

My Win XP computer at home can't read my older CDs - nothing appears on them but when I put them in a Win 98 computer all my photos are there... I'm panicking because I wouldn't want to loose those images... Any idea???

Did you make sure to close the session when you burned the cd?

your cdrom drive on your XP cd might not be able to read burned CD's. does the XP PC have a burner? are those PC's lanned? if so, just transfer the pics through your network. if not, you could put in the CDrom that reads it into your XP PC then swap em back out.

Well, how could I read it on my office desktop otherwise&&& I don't even have a burner on it??? You are scaring me...!

Sounds like you need UDF reader. If you burned the CD using 'Direct CD' or similar (session writing) then you need this software. Download it from here:

UDF Reader

actually, i've had the same problem, and Microsoft knew this would happen.

So here's what you do:

Start>
Help and Support>
Performance and Maintenance> (left column)
Click on "Fixing Performance and Maintenance Problems">
Then on the right side that opened up, click "Getting Older Programs To Run on Windows XP"
Run the Program Compatibility Wizard>
Then go through the process

Usually this works. I had the same problem. I hope this helps you out.

Something similar here... WinXP can't share prionters and my scanner, this is why I use Win98. Win98 can't cope with my camera, this is why my Mum uses WinXP. :-))))))))) Sharing work, though it seems like pulling my left ear with my right hand.

I suggest going to the homepage of the CD-rom manufacturer and searching for some new drivers. Maybe they help a bit.

Ok, I downloaded the program and installed it. Now what? I still can't read my CD...This software is not for XP though...since I'm running XP is it supposed to work???

Well, dunno... Bill Gates' mom is suurely chuckling at the moment. XP is stoopid anyway, if I don't turn the modem on, and it boots up, it doesn't see it at all. I have to connect it through wizards and then it works, or simply reboot... that's faster.

Nathalie, does your computer read only XP CDs? Or does it reject any kind? Click on My computer, Preferences, and there does it list your CD-rom at all? Sounds interesting, I have a Pioneer DVD-rom and it used to reject Cds before, too (any kind of CDs). I will ask my family what they have done to it.

What did you use for software when you originally burned the CDs?
Do you have the same software installed on your XP machine?
Did the session span several CD's?
Was the session closed?
Did you burn to Re-Writable CD?

I have a feeling this has more to do with Roxio than XP. I've got several different computers with different OS's and I can read all of my cd's from any computer. I have had trouble in the past with Roxio though, so I use Nero now. Have you tried reading the cd from any other computers (a friend's maybe?) Don't panic, your files are there, you just have to find a computer with a cd burner that can read the cd. Transfer your files to the new computer then reburn them using something other than Roxio. Whatever software you use, make sure it closes the session.

Thanks. Yes I can access the files on my Win98 office desktop. This is why it is so strange... but I think XP can't read UDF files and they don't have a driver for XP. Computers....

have you tried using a UFD reader like this?
