I don't believe the US has an official language.

In the last couple years they were trying to establish English as the official language, but I don't remember if they succeeded. Before that, there wasn't one.

You are correct. The United States does not have an Official Language. On May 18, 2006, the Senate voted on an amendment to an immigration reform bill that would declare English the national language of the United States. The immigration reform bill itself, S. 2611, was passed in the Senate on May 25, 2006, and now has to go back to the House of Representatives in conference to make sure amendments are agreed upon.

You can read more about the US language and individual states here.

Actually, you are mistaken about pronounciation of Al. There are actually two separate spellings. The British spell it Aluminium. The US spells it Aluminum. But the US spelling is generally thought to be a result of an change in spelling related to the marketing of products made with aluminium/aluminum.

Cheers!

Or you could say we just adopted the original spelling and pronunciation.

I know it's not German. That lost by one vote way back when.

I did look it up, but I'll leave it open for other guessers.
