guilty.... :P I'll try, but I don't want to seem like a B**ch. Even critical comments from me are NEVER intended to be mean. just know that guys...and gals. I don't want anyone to be discouraged from thier path because of something I said. I want to further creativity and passion not kill it. and I know that some people I speak to off of DPC get VERY discouraged when a shot isn't appreciated by others the way they appreciate it. also I don't know anything about blur. it's new territory so take my comments with a grain of salt. |
Well said, Crystal. I always try to get out of my own "box" and try to appreciate the photographer's perspective -- to try to see what they see. So, I don't give too many unappreciative comments because usually I can genuinely appreciate something of what the photographer appreciated. And I know NOTHING about blurry photography, and plan to learn everything I know here in this thread. |
I agree, but let me draw you back to MY comments (in the original forum thread)... on this subject: "agree with the keep the backpatting comments to a minimum (unless I'm premenstrual or having a really bad hair day then POUR them ON!!"
but hey, that's just me! :)

I apologize for not commenting as much as I wanted to. I have looked at nearly all of these images - a couple well more than once. I wasnt quite sure what to think of this whole thing as the idea was presented. I mean - who wants to look at a blurry picture. But when I started experimenting with it I found myself looking for different things than in my sharp images. In my sharp images I concentrated on composition and such but the main focus was, well, the focus. If the one area that I wanted sharp wasnt I chucked it.
Now comes this. I find what I am shooting and what I am preferring in blurry images tends to have a distinct flow - in curves or lines. If the shot is in color that the colors can be a bit abnormal, have an almost outlandish feel or oversaturated to help convey emotion. Funky angles are great and straightness in horizon can be a bit more boring. Heavy contrast wokrs amazingly well in b&w. Ultimately though I am looking for a purpose in the image. Whether its an image that takes my eye and moves it around the picture like an amusement park ride or its an image that makes me stop and look at the main subject and slowly branch out to see what accompanies it.
I guess like any picture it needs to have more than just a capture of what was there yet blurry. The difference between a dandelion head captured by Ursula and me going out and shooting one in my back yard straight on is immeasurable. Just like this challenge is. Taking a pic of something straight on with the focus out just to have a blurry pic just doesnt stand up against some of the really amazing stuff in this thread.
But then this is quite the challenge of a monthly challenge here. Sharpness can not save you. A different thought process has to be put in to what you are doing here. Your eye needs to see differently when browsing through your images to edit. Chances need to be taken on how you go about choosing and editing. And then biggest of all you know that these images will appeal to a far smaller spectrum than those of other monthly challenges and the regular DPC challenges. But the great thing I have found about this is that the smaller spectrum that these images appeal to seem to have a larger impact on the individual viewer.
Just call me ramblin Timfy. Not sure if any of this makes any sense what soever and odds are noone really made it through this whole comment. In the long run I have just been having a blast with this. Thank you all! |

Well, I'm having trouble making comments pointing out why I don't like some images. Partially because I can't even say what I do like about others or why I think they at least work.
To make a blanket statement or use a word that keeps coming to mind...
"Gratuitous" would be it...or gratuitous blur. Sounds like a pejorative...right? I don't really mean it to sound that way but it's the word that keeps springing to mind. Artistically speaking it always works but on other levels I'm trying to figure out why some people would be choosing to blur what they did. Or why they think the blur helps or makes the image?
Pointing towards myself that's the word I'm trying to avoid in my own shots...if I can even give myself an honest appraisal. I'm not sure if I've succeeded thus far but that's my base goal.
What does the blurring actually do for the image? Or why blur?
...and one more thing I truley appreciate comments any way they come. Except for Jutildas nasty remarks...very uncalled for. ;P

I agree!
The only Gratuitous blur I'd agree with is one which combined some Gratuitous nudity in the composition... :D ROFL ;)

Hi all~
trying again, based on  Jutilda's comments on my pic today, and  timfythetoo 's insights earlier in this thread about the blur concept in general...this is tough, especially daylight with long shutter...like waterfalls! CPL, filters, etc of course. best to find the time of day with more suitable light...or indoors, I suppose.
I am very new to photography in general, so anytime you pros want ot offer general tips I would apperciate it totally, be eternally (well, sort of) greatful & have a jumping off point for my next efforts...

Anne, I have updated the details you requested for one of the photos (Day 4 submission). Since I accidentally uploaded the duplicate copy of the photo which was already there in my portfolio, I have deleted the duplicate one and created the link to original one (with details updated). But that means, I lost your comment you left on the duplicate copy :(

im glad to hear that people are digging through old files on a hunt for blurry pics. this challenge is a super good opportunity to try out new camera techniques and stuff but its also about giving the rejects a second chance :). now, if only we could get the world to catch onto that concept ;).
