jmsetzler suggested in this thread

We should do a 50 States project. I know John done a project a while back with the different state flags.

Anyways I wanted to start a thread to make so we wouldn;t hijack the other one. Maybe evern get different suggestions.

I was thinking something like the traveling gnome. I will take a photo of an object ands mail the object to the next recipient on the list. Then that person will do the same until we cover all 50 sates. Then we can put a book together of it.

If this sounds good then we need an object. IF not offer your suggestions.

There is a world traveling stuffed tiger here World Traveler.

Maybe something light and easy to mail? I volunteer for Arizona.

I'd volunteer for NC>

What about a lens cap?

I can do Indiana. I don't have any ideas for an object to travel, but agree that something light would work out well. It will certainly take some time to travel to all the states, and would suggest using something like Priority Mail. It's only about $4 and gets there quickly, but there is a weight limit.

I would suggest a couple different types of cards, or just have the photographers email pics to Rex or whoever will put them all together.

I can see it now - the Canon vs Nikon debate starting again.

If you are going to focus on photographing a specific object, you would probably be better off not having a traveling card. Just mail the object and email the photos back :)

This reminds me of a project a friend of mine was involved in (I used to live in Chicago until a couple of months ago) for her young cousin's school project. Some of you with younger children must have heard of the Flat Stanley project. My friend had great fun taking Flat Stanley on a sight seeing tour of Chicago. This (and the other World Traveller project) sound very much like an adult (??) version.

John is right. No compact flash card. We will just have it so the photos are emailed to me and once all 50 are hereI will see what we can do to make a book.

Any other ideas on an object. I want a unigue object and something easy and cheap to ship for everyone.

A slinky would be cool :)

I like the slinky idea. I figured we would start the object in Alabama then go in Alphabetical order. It will make it easier I think.

You should try and ship to a neighboring state to cut down on shipping time (and ecological impact). Shipping it from Alabama to Alaska and then back to Arkansas doesn't make much sense to me except for the alphabeticity. You can establish the shipping order before you send it out the first time. You might also want to set a time limit for people to take their shot and pass the object along.

I'll take Florida.

This sounds like a cool idea -- I can volunteer for Virginia.

As for an object, what about an empty picture frame? It would fit great in one of the larger Priority Mail boxes, is fairly light, is "neutral" in geographic/cultural/political aspects, and provides lots of compositional possibilities...

I read Flat Stanley as a kid (I even had a huge bulletin board over my bed!) and my daughters both did the traveling Flat Stanley thing for school in the last couple of years. They enjoyed that a lot (so did my parents, the recipients/photographers/backstory writers).

I volunteer for Virginia.

Two suggestions for an object:

1) should be fun and funky looking, something that would make for a lively pic no matter the setting

2) should be an easily replaceable object, just in case USPS screws up and the object goes missing.

Oh, no! two volunteers for Virginia! Crap! (I had a great idea for where to set the shot, too, dang).

Stick me in for Tennessee. That will give me an excuse to get out of town, not that we need a big one to begin with.

Not my project, but even if there are two from the same state, it could look totally different. The mountains of MC are a completely different world from the coast. :)

You can put me in for Rhode Island, Rex. :)

Slinky or woody would work, but somehow I like the idea of a woody because it can be changed depending on the mood of the shot.

Is the intent of the pictures to be sent out of camera or processed? Will there be minimum filesize requirements?

I realle like the picture frame idea.

So far here are the suggestions:

Slinky
Woody
Lens Cap
Picture Frame

I think I like the picture frame best so far.

I'd take a stab at handling Missouri for you.

Nah we won't have a minimum file size. I have fast access and I can put them in a gallery on my smugmug until the project is done.
