I think it would be fun to try a new collaborative project. I would like to send a compact flash card around the world to as many countries as possible, where a photographer in each country shoots one photo on the card and then sends the card to the next designated person, where they do the same.

The ultimate goal of the project would be to publish a book via one of the online publishing services where anyone interested could purchase the book at cost with no markup or profit to be made in the project... just some fun and friendship among photographers around the world... I think someone else should tackle the same project covering all 50 states in the United States...

If you would like to participate, please send me a PM and you will receive further instructions. Please include your email address in that PM. I have volunteers from these countries already:

I wish you good luck as I cant shoot with CF. Its good in spirit. In the end everyone used their camera and sent the host a pic. So it would actually be considerably faster, and if anything bad happens safer and cheaper to just email them lol.

But all in spirit its cool!

Great project, John!
I highly recommend that every person that sends the CF card to the next location creates a backup DVD or two of the current contents.

You can add South Africa to your list. I'd be happy to help!

Better yet, considering you'd get 150-200 shots (depending on size) why not have the card travel hand to hand on any given continent or country (depending on ease of border crossings) and mailed across the sea.

Might tell more of the story for dpc and I think there are enough members on every continent and likely close enough to pull it off.

Then again, I might be the only one that thinks that...

And you could put me down for Canada/Alberta/Calgary, or BC/Kelowna depending when you start.

There's a potential problem with this method: some cameras (like my Canon) will reset/advance the image serial number -- not just create a new folder, if there is one or more existing folders on the card..

My images were in the folder "101_Canon" originally, and the actual image numbers were in the range 101xxxx; I was at about 8600 shots. When I got the card back after lending it to someone using a Kodak (there was a Kodak folder too), my camera created a new folder and incremented it to "102_Canon," and the image serial numbers were in the 102xxxx range -- I couldn't see any way to reset those. It mostly bugged me because it loses the running count of shutter actuations, and I'll always seem to have some "missing photos" based on the image numbers.

There is a simple solution to this problem, and I'll post about that later.

The cards are small enough and light enough -- why not send a CF card, Memory Stick, and an SD card together and let the photographer use whichever fits their camera?

or maybe shoot it with what ever you have and use a card reader to copy to the CF...that is if you have a card reader.

I'll be PM'ing you if it can get here by September 1st. I leave here for good on September 7th. Maybe to BHuseman in South Korea then down to me...fpo to fpo still free BHuseman?

I don't know if it applies for your camera but mine, d50, keeps shutter count in the exif data in a field named "Shutter Count".

I've reset the number count on the camera many times reseting the image number dsc_xxxx but the Shutter Count never resets, it only increases.

Hope it helps.

I think that's the same number I referred to as a serial number. When the camera made a new folder, part of that number incremented, from about 1018500 to 1020000. Here's a bit of the EXIF from one of my shots:

File: - G:\00_Photos_Captures\0707_Jul_Photos\070729b\IMG_3908.JPG
Make - Canon
Model - Canon PowerShot S3 IS
Image Type - IMG:PowerShot S3 IS JPEG
Firmware Version - Firmware Version 1.00
Image Number - 1023908
Owner Name -

Anyway, there's supposedly a fix to be posted for this -- we should get the thread back on-track about the photography project.

Dang, Paul. That's some SERIOUS mileage on that camera. You sure it didn't increse that number by like... a million? :-)

Has anybody started a 50 States one?

I can start it if needed although I may do it different.
