Canon Telephoto EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus Lens

Canon Wide Angle EF 24mm f/2.8 Autofocus Lens

For people that own these lenses, do you love them, hate them?

Stay away from the B&H website. Step back from the keyboard. Cigarette savings??

Yes, and I've decided that I wanna go prime for both artistic and technical reasons. I've got Canon's 28, 35 and 100mm primes (non-L) on my list too.

Go ahead then and splurge. Congrats.

Hey David, the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro is on my list too... how do you like it?

I used the 85 f/1.8 but found it rather limiting on a 1.6 crop camera due to the close focus distance being fairly long. I much prefer my 50mm f/1.4 USM. If I were to go FF one day, the 85mm would be first on my list.

I think the 24mm is another like that too. It isn't really all that useful unless you are shooting FF.

The aperture isn't great and it isn't all that wide on the Rebel.

I'd recommend either the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 or upgrading the Canon 50mm. Aside from that, you might also go with the 100mm. It's a bit longer than the 85mm, but that macro focusing is seriously shizzle. Not just for macro subjects either. It will give similar perspective to the 85mm, but allow a bit more freedom with closer focusing. That will probably be my next lens.

The reason I'm looking at the 24mm is that I find myself bumping up against the wide end of my sigma (28mm) very often for full body shots.

I will definitely consider the 100mm macro over the 85mm though.

For macro stuff I love it. For outside portrait stuff it's good also. It's sharp wide open and even sharper stopped down a couple. Has great bokeh too.

But the bokeh of the 85 1.8 is hard to beat IMHO. I have the 100 and the 85 both. I sold the 85 a while back to fund another lens, and missed it so much I bought another. But of course it doesnt seem as long on a 1.3 crop. On the 1.6 I'm sure it seems longer then it is.

Just not so sure that 24mm will be wide enough for what you are looking for.

Have you considered the 20mm f/1.8 by Sigma?

Also, I've been quite happy with the results from my 17-50 Tamron... I know it's not prime, but it's pretty damned decent for sharpness.

hey the 100mm 2.8 is one of the best lens you can get.
is sharp wide open

Haven't looked at it, but have considered the Canon 20mm

Get the 85 and start saving for a 5D. What's this cigarette savings nonsense anyway? Nobody likes a quitter...

I know its no wider, but have you had any experience with the canon 28mm 1.8?
I am interested in this lens although not many here own it.

I can't find a lot of info on that lens. It almost seems it's fallen out of favor with photogs.

A nice review on the 28mm f/1.8 USM.

How much weight have you gained...... remember in my no smoking contract, it specifies you can't gain any weight. I'll be coming to bust your knees...

I love my 100mm lens. My current personal best was shot with it.

I use the 85mm 1.8 for most of my portraits. Great quality, and great value. Never regretted it.
even though I have a 1.6x crop factor, I have no pb using it indoors, at least head & chest. For full body portraits, I'd rather us a 50mm.

A friend of mine and I bought both these lenses at the same time..me the 85 and he bought the 100...he now wishes he had bought the 85 instead, finds the 100 limited, more of a specialty lens...I have used it and prefer the 85 definitely, but hey this really is a personal choice...quality is a non-issue.

You will need a 20mm or better to even get close to "feeling wide" on a cropped sensor... 24mm just doesn't cut it IMO.

I tried the Sigma 20mm a while back and it was nice lens. My biggest complaint with it was the size... that f1.8 aperture means LOTS of glass and it weighs ton. Definitely not a good choice if you ever intend to hike with it.

I'd love to find a reasonably priced prime in the 17mm range thats not fisheye, but options are limited. So much so that I'm looking a zoom that gets down to that range instead.
