Viewed around 50 and 95% of those are shot straight ahead. Some superb images, but without any thought on a creative point of view.

Edit: this is not a rant ;)

Looking forward to seeing yours. (Marks his calendar ;) )

Remember that POV might not be the first, most obvious thing you think it is.

I'd be willing to bet that there are photos where the POV shift is subtle on purpose and cruising the entries too quickly might make you miss it.

Just a thought (and not an accusation that anyone cruised entries too fast).

It would seem to me that subtlety is not what this challenge is really about. If it's so subtle that you can't tell it's a creative or unusual point of view then has it really met the challenge?

Must be due to the fact you have improved and are obviously at a greater level than we mere mortals. If you are bored with viewing all these "straight ahead" images try turning your monitor slighty, or standing on your head.

I look forward to your rant after the voting about how poor the voting was, rating all those images "without any thought on a creative point of view" so highly.

Well here's my take on things. With the number of entries here and the challenge theme, in order to do justice voting, maybe we shouldn't try to vote for ALL the shots. Take a little longer with each one you get to. Think a little bit (I know, harder for some) and ask yourself "If this was shot from a different angle, would the impact be the same?"

Never bored looking at images. 'As I said' there a some superb photographs, but some are ruined 'score wise' without a creative POV.

That's pretty much it, some good angles with abd subjects, and some good subjects with bad angles (bad as in not being creative - not as in composition bad)

GUILTY. I am one of those who shoot my picture from a conventional angle. But then, isn't "creativity" of viewpoint quite subjective? Well, I think my subjective creativity does pay for its cost now. I just wish that members will critique the picture so that I can learn from this.

(Lately, I guess I'm getting low rank because of my non-themed entries. I only have myself to blame.)

I went from a non-convectional angle, but the effect I was after, I think lets it fall into what jon is calling 'good angles with abd subjects'
so I'm guilty aswell :(

'Point of View' is more that an extreme camera angle. However, you may, if you wish, limit your creative view to 'extreme camera angle' :)

Well, it seems pretty clear to me, at least, that the challenge was to shoot from an interesting/creative angle, position, etc. I don't think they were referring to a figurative POV.

"The position from which something is photographed is the point of view" was stated in the details.

I agree with jonpink - I think some photographers may have either misinterpreted it or missed the mark, as many shots look like normal everyday shots. On the other hand, I did see quite a few really creative ones and I'll score those higher.

That's too bad :(

The challenge was to take a picture that is made more interesting because of the point of view you chose. I myself don't read this as extreme point of view... A shot can be more powerful because of a simple POV also!
01/14/2004 10:03:22 AM · #16
Point of view....... for me is really something intangible that every artist/photographer brings to their work... I would consider this a more or less open challenge.
01/14/2004 10:03:56 AM · #17
I took an everyday thing and shot from an angle I felt made it more interesting. I took it from the point of view that I thought was interesting.... I can already see that mine is not well liked, but hey.... that's the way it goes... no big deal. It's just something for fun!

And it also said to be creative with your point of view, which to me isn't shooting from head-on. So I guess it's what part of the criteria you choose to take in to account as they seem a litle conflicting.

Hmmm... shoot from? or to? an interesting POV. I shot the 'POV' with regards to the object's atypical placement. Making a statement regarding my POV of the subject. MY faux pas was uploading the wrong picture... OH well National Geographic will be fun...

This is exactly how I interpret this, I realy could agree more.

True, but there will ALWAYS be some regular, everyday shots that take no regard to theme in EVERY challenge.
01/14/2004 11:34:01 AM · #21
Point of view = camera placement, more or less, doesn't it? It looks like that is the general understanding for this challenge. But it also looks like a number of people interpreted it as subject placement.
01/14/2004 11:34:11 AM · #22
It seems the Point Of View could also be how the photographer looks at something in his/her mind. That would make reading the title an integral part of decided whether the challenge was met or not. I've already seen a couple that fit this interpretation. I think everything has to be taken in and examined together carefully or we might miss the meaning and score some shots unnecessarily low.

I think I'll take a little extra time on these pictures.

Just my take.

Manuel - yours are some of my favourite pictures on this site. I don't care if you don't like your scores (most of which are quite high)...just keep shooting like you do!

Well this was only the second challenge I entered so maybe my POV isn't what the experienced DPC memeber expected. In my shot I saw the POV as meeting the challenge, however I am open to read any critique on how I could've made this shot better. Hopefull all of your insights will help me imporve and grab the blue ribbon! But saying the POV pics are poor? Come on, I'm sure there are many pro photographers here but really come on!

Of course, as always, pet pictures. I think most people don't get it, that the emotional investment in the pet, usually does not show through (in my opinion) to people here to vote on. Yes, there are exceptions, too. But, for the most part, pet pictures suck. I wish all newbies (and some others) were required to read a certain number of forums. Maybe they would come across these types of posts.
Anyway...some poor pics and some extraordinary pics. Just like every challenge. Good job all.
