As a windows/web application developer by trade, I wonder what the users of this site would want most in a new, as-yet-unavailable Photography-related software product.

Would you want a fancy new image editor that allowed you to back up your edits to an image, separately from the image itself?

Or perhaps software to track (legal or illegal) usage of your images on the Internet?

What about something that could auto-blog your images to Flickr or SmugMug when you insert your memory card?

How about a way to give other people the ability to edit your photos over the Internet, without having to e-mail them or publish them to a web site?

Don't have a need for any of those but it would be interesting to see what would happen if Canon and Adobe could work together to merge certain aspects of DPP and Bridge/PS.

Simple answer: DPP would cost $899 :-P

You might be on to something if you head down the path of tracking images Legal/illegal use.

As a Windows Developer you probably already know of:

Windows LiveWriter for blogging photos to many different blog sites.

Windows Meeting Space (Vista) or Live Meeting (XP) for sharing an application (edit someone's photo) across the net, can be configured to run out of IM.

As to a fancy new image editor I think that would be a tough market to get into... Microsoft dropped their whole imaging line (Picture It!/Digital Image Suite) a month or two back.

What would something like be worth? It doesn't seem out of the realm of reality.

I bet you could quit your day job and buy an island somewhere.

Seriously, if you could pull it off...there would be a lot of people knocking on your door.

I dunno... if it was effective and reliable, I think you could probably name your price.

It's already being done:

a simple feature comes to mind - something that reads directly into the EXIF of any images i have on a computer, and then lets me manage them by advanced filtering system, by date, by camera, by lens (for multi lens owners), by time (regardless of date!), by shutter speed, by aperture value.... you know?

Hmm, something akin to managing your MP3's by the artist/song/album meta data, no? Seems so simple, I'm sure someone's done it. Good idea though.

Keep em coming!

yes, but the existing ones arent thorough enough in the filtering options - dont think there are any that sorts by aperture, shutter, ISO values? hmm... think it's niche?

Lightroom can do that.

How about a plug-in for Photoshop that, when I try to same an image for entry into a challenge, throws up a window telling me not to bother, because the image is rubbish anyway?

Microsoft Photosynth looks really really cool. It's obviously been done, but I'd love to see a full featured and fully functional version of it.

I'm a developer as well and have often thought about this.

- The EXIF search thing seems useful, but probably done. But is there a FREE tool that does it?

- I got excited about an image recognition idea I had, but it is indeed being done. Maybe a DPC-centric version would find a place here?

But what would really be useful, I think, is a FREE image editor that does the necessary photographic editing, and does it well.

Think about it - Photoshop is expensive, but it dose EVERYTHING. All one really needs is:
- Crop, rotate
- The common adjustment layers (levels, curves, hue/sat, B/W, etc.)
- Sharpening (USM, maybe others) handled as an adjustment layer
- An extensible plug-in facility for more complex operations. Let users write and contribute these.
- - Maybe tone mapping
- - Maybe noise reduction

But the real kicker is that it must be fast, must be built with photographic editing in mind, should do everything with layers (even sharpening), and handle previews quickly.

The GIMP does NOT fit this bill. I use the Gimp a lot, and IMO, it's built with graphic editors in mind, not photographers. It's HUE/SAT capability is lame next to Photoshop's, and it's previews are slow not always real-time. It also lacks adjustment layers, which I think are key.

Focus on photographic editing, do those things very well, and make it free.

If one made this free tool - one would still be poor, but it'd be awesome. =D But hey - maybe it already exists...

The ability to resize images with fine detail and not get any jagged lines whatsoever while still being able to sharpen across the image as a whole (no going back with history brush/blur to combat jaggies).

Can you do that already with PHOTOMECHANIC?
