I've kept quiet on this topic for the simple reason that I was irked & saddened when I read it, and needed to decide how I wanted to word my reply.

I'm with Ken/Art Roflmao on this one: "The day this becomes a Photography-Only site is the day I go looking for a funner place to hang out."

As has been previously mentioned, it is your choice whether to read a topic/thread or not read it. Simple as that.

I don't agree with a lot of what is written here, but I'm sure not going to tell someone not to say what they think, feel or know. I'm also not going to tell someone who is reaching out for whatever reasons, that they can't reach out. Whether I personally know them or not, we are connected, simply because we belong to DPC and more importantly, I think, connected because we are humans.

I've never met Lesley (goodman), but from her images I know that I feel connected to her and would love to meet her. (Just one of many that I feel that way about!) I know others feel the same way, just because we may not have met everyone, doesn't mean we don't feel like we know them in some way or form.

Yes, this is a forum for photography challenges, but it is also, as someone pointed out, a family of sorts. Some come here to learn, for advice, for strength, for compassion, for a good cry that is over due, and of course for a good laugh that is much needed.

I'm sorry that the OP is "so freaking sick of hearing about people's very personal issues on here!" You have a choice, to read it or not to read it, just as we all have that choice.

Just my thoughts.

When I first joined I was incredibly intimidated by the work I saw here. I was afraid to ask any stupid newbie questions (that would help me learn) because those I wanted to learn from seemed like professionals who would look down their noses on the likes of me.

By reading the forums (and not just the photography threads) I've learned that they're, for the most part, just ordinary folks like me. They laugh, cry, hurt, and care, and about more than just their cameras!

Without being allowed to see the whole person I'd still be sitting in the corner, not asking questions, and not learning a fraction of what I have (and not the proud owner of a new DSLR!)

I'd like to thank everyone for keeping this thread civilized. We are all entitled to our own opinions and points of view and I stand by mine. Like I said before, I don't want DPC to eliminate all personal talk. It never bothered me before these heavily personal threads started popping up recently. I think the line was crossed and I wish people excersized some restraint. Again, it's not about elimination, it's about moderation.

We could all be allowed one personal thread per year. We'd activate a check box available in the post-creation window labelled "This is my one personal thread this year". After using the check box, it would be replaced by a 365 day countdown.

Of course, it would be money-wise for D&L to sell extra personal threads at cost. ;-)

I heard they were going to sell a "RACIST RANT" pass, on a buy one get one free limited edition deal. It entitles the owner to one racist rant per pass, but no more then 300 words, and targeted at no more then 2 races at a time.

Oh, well that's no fun. :-(

My hope for the one-per-year personal thread would be that, because of it's rarity, the poster would include an explosion of concentrated, descriptive, lurid details.

I can understand both the OP's perspective and that of those who liken DPC to a personal community of friends. But, clearly, not all DPC members are alike and it's unlikely that we're going to develop a consensus over what constitutes an 'appropriate' post.

Since that's the case, can't this all be mitigated by simply creating a 'Personal' forum, as suggested several times previously in this thread, which can be filtered by those who don't want to view these types of posts. This is same rationale for why we've had a 'Rant' filter for so long.

The comment was also made that the OP can simply filter the 'General Discussion' forum, but there is a great deal in that forum that is NOT personal; looking at current top 20 threads, most either involve photography or are matter-of-fact how-to-type inquiries. I would hate for people with expertise not to offer their insights to others on these matters because they've blocked the forum to avoid posts of a personal nature.

Finally, the suggestion that the OP simply ignore posts of a personal nature on the basis of the thread topic is problematic, too. What if the personal content isn't obvious by the header? I could be wrong, but it seems to me that a separate forum would solve all these issues.

Perhaps in some instances, but even in those with personal content that's not indicated from the title, it's almost always quite evident with in the first line or two.

Is the obvious answer to rename "General Discussion" to "Non-Photography Discussion". The current name and short descriptor are not very informative.

I really don't understand the outcry against the suggestion that a "Personal" forum be created. What is it those who object to the suggestion are afraid of?

There are forums for the DPL, Side Challenges, Out and About and even Member Interviews. About a year ago a separate Buy/Sell forum was created to eliminate the clutter from the Hardware/Software forum. It is nice to be able to easily spot the difference between those threads that want to discuss a lens and those that want to sell one. What is so onerous about creating a forum where people seeking personal advice can post and those who are interested in reading those sorts of things can go?

On-topic, since Chiqui still wants to read the announcement type (weddings, babies, etc) why not just have one new section for those? Then everything else is just fine where it is.

Well, if you create a new forum "specifically" for people's personal matters, then this site starts to bridge out into a psychology forum. If a bunch of people here were American Idol fans, you wouldn't want to create a separate American Idol forum -- that's not what this site is about. It makes a lot more sense to have one General Discussion (two if you count Rants) for any and all topics not related to the focus of this site.

Alternatively, how about we encourage people with personal issues to post them in the Challenge Suggestions forum. It might make for some interesting challenges.
