I hardly ever post in Rant or even start a Rant thread myself but I just need to get something off my chest. Please keep in mind this is not a personal attack on anyone, just a general rant.

I am so freaking sick of hearing about people's very personal issues on here! I understand that we as a virtual community get comfortable with each other and what not but there are some things that should just not even come up in a photography website.

Simple announcements like you're getting married, having/had a baby, got engaged etc are fine but there is really NO need to go into detail about your personal life to the extreme I have seen lately. I dare say most of us don't really want to hear that your cat died, your significant other left you (and go into GREAT detail about it) or you got beat up by a family member. Really, how is that appropriate for a photography website? In my very humble opinion, those are things that should be kept between people very close to you and if you feel the need to talk to someone, find someone you actually know and trust, not 60000+ strangers.

There are forums out there where this sort of topic is approprite but I do not believe DPC to be one of those. Again, no personal attacks, the threads I made mention of are just the ones that came to mind.

This is a photography site people not a therapists' office, why don't we try and keep it that way?

June, this is what the rant section is for. Many people here consider this to be a big community that stretches beyond photography. We have become family.

In all seriousness, you can turn off the rant section if you do not care to read such things. Or there is an ignore button on the top of each new forum thread just for that reason.

I personally find it endearing that so many people feel comfortable enough here to post such private issues. To each his own I guess.

Barb, these threads are not being started in the Rant section, they are started in the General Discussion section which you cannot turn off.

That is why I added the bit about the ignore option.

I suppose when you own your website you can patrol it however you wish. Drew, Langdon and the SC have allowed users here various forum categories in order to express themselves in many ways without offending others, who can turn off those "offensive" categories. I do, however, think it a shame that people's personal lives offend you. That's too bad.

Turn off the General Discussion section and you shall never see this "stuff".

I think the overall sentiment is that it would be nice to have more photography and less other stuff. I cannot say I disagree, however, building a community sometimes requires more personal connections. What I wish is that everyone would use some restraint and discretion when building their connections.

You are much more eloquent than I am!

It's a Coffee Shop actually.
Would be kinda' nice to have a catch-all forum besides rant, for personal stuff. Getting varied opinions on life's problems can be such a benefit, as a well as having a big virtual shoulder to lean on at times.

Hardly. If you guys were part of my family, then I'd never hear from you at all. After all, someone has to be the black sheep.

:D

I can't stand all this personal crap either. It doesn't belong in any forum here.

Not true actually. You can turn off the General Discussions through the forum filter. As a paying member, you can also ignore the thread via the dropdown and anyone can choose to ignore a thread the old fashion way by simply choosing not to click on the thread title.

You can just set the thread to ignore and never see it again, not too hard. I am sure there are threads raging as I write this I'll never see them again.

OK, I stand corrected, however, these threads usually have inconspicuous titles and you don't find out what they are about until it's too late. I don't want to ignore the General section because for the most part, it has things I'd want to know about.

What I don't understand is when people post personal stuff and are using their real name in their profile.

Are they not worried that friends, family, work colleagues etc. might stumble across it? - And also, they have no idea how long this forum database will last for. Their great-great-grandchildren might be googling them some years in the future and stumble across this juicy nugget of family history.

No, Photography Discussion is for general photography stuff. General Discussion is for, "No other place for it? Try here!"

*BIG HUG* I highly doubt the OP was directed at you. You are not the first nor will you be the last to cry on the shoulder of DPC, and your friends here will always be here for you. Please don't take this general discussion as an attack on you or your recent misfortune.

I do believe you can turn off any section except for announcements. But you personally wouldn't want to!

Maybe a popup when an initial post is started, saying something along the lines of:
"The General Discussion Forum is for non-photography related issues. Is this where you want your post to be?"

So you have to read a little of it before you ignore it...it takes just a few seconds out of your day.

For some people, this may be the only place they have to talk about stuff that's bothering them. We work hard to make this place a very friendly community then, what...we're supposed to discourage part of what makes the forums friendly? Like it or not, some people build a family around their internet friends.

I disagree - it seems very obvious to me.
