Normally for infrared on digital you need to put a filter in front of your camera and use long exposures to allow enough of the IR light to get through to the sensor on your camera. Another way you can do it is to have a camera customized where the internal IR blocking filter on the sensor is removed and replaced by one that blocks the visible spectrum. I decided to go this route and had a Fuji F31fd converted by the people at //www.maxmax.com . //www.lifepixel.com is another place which does conversions. This allows me to shoot with more "normal" exposures.

I set my white balance with a green plant on my balcony and took my new toy to the San Diego Zoo. I set my ISO to 100 and used aperature priority. Mostly was about f/5.6. I loved the results I got. Infrared has the most dramatic effect when you shoot thigns with plants (which go white) and skies (which go dark) so I decided to concentrate on the large animals out in the open. This also gets me to try to frame shots differently than I might have otherwise. The goal was no longer trying to get as close to the subject as I could but instead to include more of their environment. In a couple of shots I did use photoshop to remove some of the posts and wires of the enclosures- the elephant in particular. I hope you enjoy the shots. They were far better than I expected!

The colors are pretty much as I get them- I do need to increase the contrast a bit. I am still experiment with what sort of processing I like best. Haven't really tried much in just black and white yet.

Among these, I think my favorite is the giraffe through the trees. I just wish it did not have the flare spot in the lower right corner. I like the rhino a lot too.

Jeffry - I really really like them all! Great shots - like you, I think the giraffe is awesome. Too bad about the flare, but they are all "unreal". Truely some of the finest infra red stuff i've seen. Really unworldly looking.

That is indeed some cool stuff. I'm thinking about having my Canon G6 converted. Anyone have any experience with that camera and IR?

I had just received the camera back and used it the day the Dreams Challenge closed. I was going to submit this one but it rolled over before I could finish editing and submitting it. I love the effects you get with the camera. Thank you all for your comments!

Most from 1/100 sec to 1/300 second at mostly f/5.0.

Lifepixel can do that for you. Check out their website- it has a lot of good information on it. There is a link in my first post.

Damn, I wish it was not so expensive to have a camera converted.

07/24/2007 02:42:00 PM · #23
Cost was one reason I chose the Fuji. The camera cost me about $200 (After a Fuji $30 rebate good through July 31st) plus $175 for the conversion and $20 shipping. A DSLR conversion runs $350 to $500 plus the cost of the body and then you have to carry a lot of bulk if you want to be able to shoot in IR and color.

Another was the sensor is bigger than most P&S cameras and they only put six megapixels on it- putting more pixels on a smaller sensor means that less light hits each one and can mean lower image quality. More MPs is not necessarily better.

I notice that there are no other photos with this camera that come up on search of DP review. This could give me my third camera which I had the highest scoring photo at some point. On my Konica Minolta Dimage A200 I used to be #1 (still have #2 and #3) and I was briefly #1 with tne Nikon D80 but that was only because I was one of the first people to have one. I was quickly dethroned there and have not threatened to take back the crown. I don't see that happening.

Wow, no landscape IR shot has made me want to shoot IR than these. I never knew that the animal color wold come out like this. Really great image. A perfect example of how great contrast and interesting effects can be produced without the use of extreme PS contrast/color/HDR/etc. I am now really considering Stealing that same camera for the same purpose. VERY impressive.
