Hmmmm, National Geographic, wouldn't Sports Illustrated have been more inspiring?

NG is much more interesting and broad. You can photograph just about anything and it would fit. Sports would fit into that as well. Anything to do with geography, anthropology, science, exploration, culture, history...the list goes on and on.

For anyone interested, you can view over 11 million images from the National Geographic Society at the National Geographic Image Collection. It might provide some insight into the wide variety of images that Society photographers have captured in past 115 years or so.

Great challenge topic. In some ways, it's really a "free study". I think it will demand strict attention not only to photographic quality, but to emotional impact. It will be a difficult challenge, since we do not have text (except a title) to tie in to the subject; the winning photos will have self-evident high-impact emotional messages coupled with great photographic quality.

I was just thinking the same thing but I have a feeling we will see some that are similar to some of those listed at the archives and people will expect high scores because they are listed there as well.

I've been at that link on and off all day long, type in dog, cat, horse, house, desk (one at a time) and see what comes up. It's going to be a tough challenge to come up with something that really jumps out at you and sends a message. Honestly, very few of those photos really jump out at me. What has always gotten my attention 99% of the time with NG is the cover pictures so that is what I will be keeping in mind when I get ready to shoot mine. It won't come close, LOL, but that is what I will have in the back of my mind.

Got a feeling we will be hearing a lot of complaining on this challenge after it starts

Last edition has a B2 bomber on the cover... it seems like just another open challenge, as long as you put a yellow border around the picture...
01/12/2004 06:33:16 PM · #15
Correct me if I'm wrong. It doesn't say a 'cover'. So no need for a yellow border. Try your best at a shot that might appear in National Geographic.
Not that you couldn't do that of course.
01/12/2004 06:44:17 PM · #16
yes, no need for a yellow border - but there isn't really any sort of 'theme' for national geographic was all the point I was trying to make - it covers pretty much everything and anything.

I just got the January edition and that is just what they have, but not pygmy. Its more interesting than the cover article about Mars.

Nazgul, back in 1997 National Geographic did a feature on Iceland. You have lots to photograph in Iceland - um, with the (perhaps) handicap that it's a bit dark in Iceland right now...

I haven't looked at their Image Collection so I may be wrong but I read the mag for many, many years. I don't remember seeing any B&W, nor many studio set-up type shots. Get outside.

Now you've opened it up to blatant copies of existing images. There was at least one 'copy' of an existing idea in the Motivational Poster challenge, which no doubt was as a result of a thread containing a link to a site containing such posters. I'm too cynical to think it was a coincidence.

An original idea is certainly best. But a beginner photographer (like me) would learn a lot from even trying to re-create a great shot.
