without wishing to give a challenge idea away, can anyone suggest a substance which can be used as a blood substitute for a photo? I think they used chocolate syrup in "Psycho", but I'm looking for something that can be used in colour.

Costume shops usually sell fake blood.

If it's smeared, I believe ketchup doesn't work badly. If it's pooled, I think karo syrup with food coloring.

Just a comment on the use of fake blood. You might find that however creative and well done that it'll score lower.

My 2 cents.

A real artist would use real blood. Maybe even his/her own. :D

HA!

Wasn't there a guy that mixed blood and feces in his paints? Was a huge controversial exhibit in NY if I recall.

Not to mention I'm sure it smelled like ass.

The stuff we used for the vampire musical we did in college was made with chocolate syrup, but I don't remember what else was in it. I think corn syrup and food coloring, with cornstarch for thickening. It tasted pretty good. Just remember that real blood is not fire engine red, so you need to mix it with something dark.

I think the corn syrup-based recipe in the previously-posted link is pretty standard in the film industry.

You could also by some meat, and there will probably be enough blood in the packaging to use for a typical photo ...

Ketchup gets the idea across, but (as mentioned) does not look at all "real" ...

I did a photo recently ('The Infected' in my profile) and made up some fake blood for it. The link which was posted earlier was very similar although I missed the water and used Condensed milk instead of flour. It was very tastey! :D Looks really great too I think..

pomegranate juice works very well, especially dripping from your mouth...yummy.

might try mixing it with cornsyrup to make it thicker.

If you'll check my Paper Challenge entry, apparently melted red sealing wax makes a very good blood substitute.

I am one of those Halloween nuts who does a semi-haunted house every year. I personally use the Corn Syrup style. It works best for me.

For washable blood.
Use thick washing up liquid as the base, red food colouring, a drop of blue food colouring and maybe burnt sugar or coke syrup to darken.
Looks good onstage.

I have better pictures from the shoot but this is uploaded already. I used strawberry syrup mixed with chocolate syrup. You got to mess around a bit till you get the color you are lookin for. It turned out really good it tastes awesome as well. And of course it is really cheap to buy....
