For tight headshots, it's en vogue, probably not so cool for full body shots. Cropping limbs at joints is not cool though - visual amputation traumatizes the viewer.

I'm so happy with this score, I wish I had a whole dancing fruit basket!! :)

Will this help? Congrats on the great score too!

You rock, Brad! Thank you so much for expressing my joy! Dance fruit, DANCE!! :)

depends on whose head it is....LOL seriously.....for a tight crop, I like it....just don't cut their ear in half....(IMHO all or none looks better) That can sometimes look funny....; )

Still only two comments from yesterday morning!

This is a disappointing challenge , to say the least. There are some landscapes in here that I voted a 4,,, now my entry is 4.69 with one stinking comment & at least it is a portrait. I feel now that the side challenges are a much better learning tool than this CRAP !

I must say, photography is the most frustrating piece of delight i've ever experienced ;)

The low scores are frustrating. I've voted on nearly all the entries. The ones that were obviously not portraits I didn't vote on at all rather than give out a really score. If an image had a person in it I gave it at least a 5.

I think there are some subtleties about portrait photography and natural light that many of the entrants are missing.

Snapshots are not portraits. A lot of the entries have a candid snapshot feel to them. My guess is these are not scoring as well as expected.

Outdoors, while indeed natural light, is not always flattering, espeicially if the sun is high in the sky and the light is directly overhead. Again, I'll wager that the harsh outdoor light shots are not scoring well.

Natural light portraits taken early or late in the day will have better light than those taken in the middle of the day. Also, natural light can come through a window, in open shade, through blinds, etc.

And people who enter pictures of their children or loved ones feel they should score higher on gerenral principle. I fall into that category myself. ;-)

Those with the lower than expected scores, wait until the challenge is over and compare the high scoring images to the lower scoring images and you'll see what I'm talking about.

This is a learning site as well as a compitition site. If you don't score as high as you like, learn from it for the next time.

Yes, I did see many entries that were not specifically portraits. Many of the one's that have people in them have a candid amateurish look that I don't like.

But my shot was carefully planned. Lighting and pose were taken into account, and relation to the challenge was carefully analyzed. Sadly, the two comments I do have are contradictory, so there is not much help in that regard. :P

Side challenges? What side challenges? Is this something you have to be an actual factual member for?

Nah, I think it's just an unofficial thing. Someone announces in the forums that they're having a themed 50 day side challenge (along the lines of that) and you post your pictures for that theme, usually one per day.

I think that's how it happens, but I was always told it was the stork.

dropped .25 in roughly 50 votes...it's spiraling out of control!
Guaranteed to be my worst to date at this rate.
On a bright note...just got a Wacom tablet!!! Cheap at Best Buy!

It is becoming apparent that people either love my entry or they hate it. Lots of 3's but enough 6's & 7's to keep the average reasonable. Yeah for the fave!

Just wondering, whats the point of posting to a "scores thread", and then omitting to post your score?

Mark, by the way, you just posted on this score thread and omitted your score too ;)

You can understand people not wanting to jinx their good score. But considering the number of dancing bananas, (and the shot itself if you can spot it), you can guess that noisemaker is in the 7.x territory, so close to ribbon territory :)
