haha...it's funny I showed my team my three choices for this challenge. They chose one...but I was so in love with another...that I entered it. And it's been a love - hate relationship. some people love it...and some people completely hate it. I already got a favorite on it and I already got a comment where some one hated it.

Actually the one person who commented that they didn't like it...stated that they hate these type of shots (referring to the type of shot i took), but were going to try to put their biases aside while commenting and voting...no offense to the commenter, but when you start a comment like that, more than likely you didn't put your bias aside. BUT then again, they weren't the only person to hate it (based on my score).

But I still love the shot!!!!!

I am pleased anytime I do better than a 6.0 in a portrait challenge.

Ging up still, slowly regaining trust in DPC voters. I'll say it again that this is my best shot so far and all though it will never get published anywhere the subject paid money for a nice big A3 print of it.

Guess I made one person happy

A portrait is a painting, photograph, or other artistic representation of a person. Portraits are often simple head shots or mug shots and are not usually overly elaborate or creative. The intent is to show the basic appearance of the person, and occasionally some artistic insight into his or her personality.

It's above my average, so I'm happy with it. The WB was a bit tricky and I'm still not happy, but who is every really happy with their work?

Total newbie/ammy here. This was my first try.

I agonized over my editing for the last 2 days (too much? not enough? should I __? may not use __?). Ironically, the comments are on a key feature that I wasn't sure of, and another that I considered doing but thought might be illegal. I really didn't want a DQ on my first try!

But, if you regulars are getting such low scores (I haven't voted yet - they'll probably go up, lol), I may not finish dead last after all.

My info -

Good luck. Had a look through the pics and I think I've already spotted the winner.

The voting is harsh it seems like. I hope over the days my score goes up. I really felt like this was the best entry I've had so far. Here's my score.

Stupid me...

Why did I enter a challenge that represents what half of the photographers here make a living at??

I hope I will at least get some helpful comments from all the experienced portrait photographers out there.

Okay, we had a very long discussion over what would probably get dinged in another thread. Yet, I am seeing a whole lot of really nice portraits where the light source is not immediately obvious. There's at least one picture that was shot in front of a backdrop. While I'm giving everyone the benefit of the doubt that they used a completely natural light source, I don't think other voters are nearly so accepting. Repeat after me: Does Not Meet Spirit Of Challenge.

Then, there's a whole bunch that although obviously shot outside or right in front of a window, that probably don't meet what most people would consider a "portrait" as opposed to a candid.

I already know which shot you were talking about. Look for the sunlight on the person. I think in that same thread we determined that you can shoot with a backdrop and still use natural light....

I think that's prolly why alot of people are seeing low scores. Alot of people are prolly looking for a shot outside or showing a window not realizing that natural light can be taken indoors without showing a window or open door.

Isn't that pretty much what I just said? When I Googled Natural Light Photography, I found some really great portraits taken in front of backdrops using skylights or other windows for lighting. I ran it past the gang here, and the general consensus was it would get, DNMSoC'd. *I* am choosing to give everyone the benefits of the doubt that their shots used natural light, and I give neither rat's hind or foreparts about the "Spirit of the Challenge." I'm voting everything on whether or not I think it's a good portrait. But, that's me.

haha...I think most of us in that thread were just giving you a hard time..lol. But it's true, it needs to appear to use natural light. And if it doesn't appear to have natural light, then it would get dinged. Haven't gone through them all yet, but i saw that one and was was just saying from that photo you can see the sunlight coming in fron the left of the photo. It's just a matter of will people look to see that that's sunlight or see the backdrop and immediately think studio.

Glad you are giving everyone the benefit of the doubt (i prolly wouldn't be...lol)

Cheer up! Nobody seems to be doing very well! This could be the first challenge ever where the winners are in the 5.something range!

Have you ever noticed how not everyone shares their scores? Perhaps those people are not sharing their scores because they are high and they don't want to jinx it. I anticipate a mid to high 6 top score at least.

Edit: Spelling

There are some extremely good entries in this challenge that will score very well indeed. I agree that many of the entries will score lower than people expect, but many entries appear to have very harsh light or dull light. Those that know how to use and see light always seem to shine. It's a good thing I don't "Do" portait challenges - my skills in this area are non-existent.
