Would a portrait usually be of just the persons face? Or upper body in a general pose? Or full body in a general pose? Or just of a person with interesting surroundings smiling and jumping in the air be OK?

It could be any of those...

It's a portrait. You make a photograph, which portays a subject. You don't use artifical lights. Pretty general really.

My favorite kind of portraits are environmental, ones that really tell you about the subject. Look back through the challenge archives for ideas, there was a challenge just for that.

So is it OK to use a reflector?
07/11/2007 03:14:41 AM · #5
might turn out to be a contest to see who could create natural light effects from artifical lights ;)

It would actually be legitimate to use as many artificial light sources as you may want, as not meeting the challenge criteria is not grounds for disqualification. As far as the spirit of the rules are concerned, that's a different matter.

Reflectors would certainly fall within the spirit of the rules, as one is really only using natural light, just redirecting it.

This is probably a stupid question, but what about fill flash? I just did a bunch of pictures that were natural light, except for fill flash on some of them, but they're outside the dates of the challenge.

Used Fill Flash

I don't want to show the ones I didn't use any fill flash, eventhough the customer was very happy. She said it was the best picture ever taken of her daughter. But, I might try and use her as a model, and I don't want her to be recognized.

I think that is not within the spirit of the challenge. Any kind of flash (except a lightning flash) really doenst seem like natural light to me.

Okay, how can you actually tell if someone only used natural light?

If I submit something like this, which is a natural light portrait, am I going to get a whole lot of comments telling me it doesn't meet the spirit of the challenge?

Probably, sorry to say. Although some people may take the time to look at the catch lights in the eyes to check for the shape of a window.
