This is not a post about PS Masking! It is about "backwards masking" in music.

Forget about if you agree or disagree on the fact that old rockers such as Led Zepplin, Black Oak Arkansas and Queen actually put these in their songs. And please don't tell me I've got too much time on my hands. I did a huge report on this in communications class in college and received a "B" on the final grade.

I would like you to try this:

Get on your computer or whatever device you have. Say "another one bites the dust". If you can, try to say it like freddie says it in the song. Go to your software and listen to your recorded voice in reverse and tell me what is sounds like.

I didn't check google or youtube but their may be samples out there already but it's more fun if you do it yourself.

Hahah. Youuuu reallly have to listen to that ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST a few times before you get it. I did this in 7th grade for a class (psyche class) and nobody got it on the first try, but as soon as you plant the seed in their heads of what they are hearing, then you definitley notice it.

But don't listen to the song...do it yourself. More fun.

No, im saying even when you do it yourself, if you dont know what you are looking for, its a bit hard. You hear something, but you dont know what really until someone clues you in, and then you hear it clear as day.

Apparently if you recite and backplay the poem JABBERWALKY it has some sort of racist undertone or something.

Another good one for the lazy. Be careful. We'll make Christians out of all of you.

Wasn't there supposedly one in The Wall somewhere where it said, "Congratulations! You found the hiden message. Call Big Pink" then it actually gives a phone number?

I'm a Christian, but I've never worried about backwards masking. I only listen to the music forwards.

Empty Spaces, if click strangesghost's link it has about ten songs with messages, that is one of them. :)

We all listen to it forward. However, the theroy is that your subconscience (sp) is tipped off to it.

Also...this is not a "groove" put in to the record. It is certian vowel combos and syllables that when said forward sound normal but backwards it is totally different. There is a whole science behind it. Look up "backwards masking".

If I remember correctly the part in "Empty Spaces" is not true backwards masking. In the song played forward you can clearly hear the part being spoken backward. The backward part in that song is being played in addition to the "forward" stuff.

In true backward masking...the words your actually here foward, like "another one bites the dust" actually have a different "forward" sound when being played backwards. In other words...if I say "kenskid is great" and then reverse it with a computer, you will hear a bunch of crap! If I say "another one bites the dust" you can hear a true and different phrase when played backward.

I remember watching the church freaks on TV demonstrating this with all kinds of records, claiming that Rock and Roll was the tool of the Devil and generally raising a fuss about nothing.

Hilarious!

No matter what you beleive, backwards masking is a science and has merit. If a band decides to use phrases that conjure up the devil is another matter. Those "church freaks" don't care if it is backwards or forward, they were against all lyrics that they deemed evil.

I believe it all started as an accident, people finding stuff there that wasn't, then when the HolyRollers pushed it, rockers did it on purpose.
Right now, instead of fighting backwards masking...lets work on forwards rapping.

EDIT: FUnny as I listened to all those previously posted (the link), I could not understand a freakin word, backwards. But after seeing the words, you can (sortof) hear the "message."

Yeah and now they're on about Harry Potter.

I long ago figured out the big secret behind "rock-n-roll is the devil." Most Christian music stinks. Most of (not all of) the artists are either not talented enough to make it in a secular market, or they're only in it until they can cross over. So, the THEY behind Christian music got together to decide what they could do to force people to listen because heaven forbid that they improve the music. So, they decided they'd make it a sin not to listen! Hence the whole "rock-n-roll is the devil" bit.

But, if you're a church goer, hang out at your local video store sometime and watch what these same "rock-n-roll/devil" people are checking out. How is it okay to watch Hannibal Lector eat somebody's face off, but not to listen to AC/DC? The Bible doesn't describe my ears as the lamp of my body. It's probably only been in the last five years that I've heard anyone start talking about what people watch, and that's because there's starting to be a Christian movie market. Watch. As the Christian movie production increases, you'll hear an increase in sermons about not watching non-Christian movies.

do you all also know that they could display images on TV that isn't visible to the naked eye?

Here is an example of backwards masking.

Well saying most Christian artists stink is a pretty general statement, it really depends on what you are defining as "Christian". I happen to know MANY Christian artist that can sing and preform circles around their secular equals (using that term loosly). There are some that could still use some work but what genre doesn't have that? The true Christian singers are there to help spread the word of God and to honor Him, not just to "force" people to listen instead of making it better, quite a few of them HAVE made it better. There are quite a few that have crossed over to secular and some that have actually crossed back because they didn't like the lifestyle but again, I bet it happens in all genre.

Maybe the Christian artists you are listening to are out of your age appreciation group. Here is a link that lists secular artist along with Chrisitian artist that have a similar style (or it could be Christian artist and seculars have a similiar style). There are some for everything from Rap (TobyMac is awesome) to hard metal and everywhere in between. And if you listen closly you might notice many of the songs don't "sound" like what most people think God music is, but are just pleasant to listen to (unlike a lot of the stuff out there today).

I said most Christian music. There's plenty of Christian bands that I absolutely love.... Rez Band, Steve Taylor, VOL, Rich Mullins just to name a few. But, IMHO the majority of what I hear on the Christian radio stations stink and stink badly, and that is what the establishment is trying to run down my throat.

I also just don't buy into the idea that I'm bad if I listen to secular music. I listen to both.

Trust me I'm with you on that, I listen to just about everything...I do have my lines though and I've had those long before I was a Christian.

I don't understand how you are saying they are trying to run them down your throat if you have the option to turn them off or not, maybe I'm not seeing it your way, just trying to understand. Might not even be the place for it so it can die here if desired.

I'll leave the debate about the "science" for later. I'm sure there's a technology for it and a theory, but neither one makes for scientific fact.

I just remember the hilarity of hearing from them how the armies of Satan were luring innocent Christians to the doom with rock and roll.

FWIW, I like several "Christian" bands independent of their religious affiliation. On the whole, they're much much better than they used to be. Anyone remember Stryper?

Once upon a time, as part of my youth group in church played Van Halen's Runnin' with the Devil on the tape player in the sanctuary while we were decorating it for Christmas

Because then I go to church and listen to long winded sermons about how Lynyrd Skynyrd is evil. The Class Rock station is evil. Anything but the crappy, too many commercials, and too much talking Christian radio station is evil!

hahahahahahaha! I have one of their ALBUMS (those vinyl things they use to put music on) still, that was PURE WHITE. Pretty cool to see, but the music was not that great. Couple good songs though.

edit: HEY! It's worth $20 on ebay. LOL
