I've been thinking about creating a website dedicated to listings and reviews for a collection of photographic resources found on the internet.
Having done some research i've come to the conclusion that the common link style websites are lacking in information and simply display a list of websites with a short description.

What I wish to create is a base for photographers looking for links to sites such as forums, equipment reviews, hardware, online stores etc and I would like to display a link with an in-depth review about each site and what it offers and perhaps a section for user comments and reviews.

I'm really after some feedback as to whether or not this has the potential to be useful to some people, and any suggestions on a domain name for this type of site?

I've not heard of DMOZ before but I've just had a quick look and it doesn't look easy to navigate around and there is so much information there I can't help but think it would be a mundane process to try and find exactly what you are after.

I would be looking to create something more visual with the emphasis on easy navigation, and perhaps including screenshots in the review for a particular site would help people to determine quickly and easily if that is the type of website they are looking for??

Well at the very least whatever you create should 1) be listed in DMOZ since it feeds most major search engines, 2) should add listings to DMOZ through //dmoz.org/help/submit.html.

Sure that provides plenty of links but I havn't really got a clue what each site is about, as again, it only offers a short description about the site. With so many links what are the chances of finding a site I am really after?

I'm with dewdodesign on this one, both of those sites probably offer some great links, but they're horrible to look at. These are the sorts of pages you close the second they pop up for fear they'll infect your mind... perhaps a simpler design and a better description for sites. Perhaps a wiki style where articles about sites could be submitted and reviewed before being posted.

I'd be happy to provide webspace for such a thing.

Is this such a bad idea?

Honestly i think it (please forgive me) a useless waste of space. Most people are going to search google. No one wants to sort through a mess of links no matter how well its organized.

If you want to write a photography only search engine that might work, but honestly I don't go looking for a site like that. Besides the time i waste googling to find your site i could have been looking for the site i need to find.

Im sadly always searching for something useful to make be its always out there.

Anyways forgive me just my outright opinion.

nah that's cool, i appreciate your honesty.
I'm sure for a lot of people like yourself who already have a few sites you regularly use it will not be all that helpful, but there must be a market for this type of site otherwise photolinks.com would not be celebrating it's 10th year.

So i guess the question should really be whether or not there is the need for another weblink style site, regardless of how user friendly it is....

check out RED ZEE and do a quick search... might be a good model base for a photography "link" site/search engine. Do a quick search and see what it comes back with :)

I haven't seen that many out there and any of the ones listed here were not complete at all. Most of them are geared twords finding photographers and what you're wanting to put together (I think) is a resource for photographers. Big difference.

So again, I think it would be great :0)
