I'm split between the Canon G5 and Sony F717. I can get a used F717 with 128mb stick for about the same price as a new G5 without memory.

Right now I'm leaning in favor of the F717 because of the flexability with the zoom and the laser focusing for low light in additoin to what seems to be a very solid camera in terms of performance and features.

Any input which could turn me the other way?

I think only you can really answer this question because it is a personal choice. One thing to keep in mind is that the Sony has a larger sensor that generally relates to less noise levels making for cleaner images. I really enjoy my F707.

I really like my G5, but why don't you try them both out. Get a cf card and go to the camera store, and shoot with the G5, then, do the same with the Sony. The sales guy should give you a way to get the images onto a compatible media without buying a Mem Stick if you tell him you want to compare the images before you buy. You may not want to mention the part about getting the Sony used, unless you would be getting the used one throught the store. Then you can look at the same shots side by side and also you will get to hold them both in your hand and see how they work. I was put off by the Sony's form as it felt awkward to use. Many others aren't. While you're at it, why not look at the Nikon 5400, or the Oly 5050? Anyway, whatever you get, enjoy it.

I have recently aquired the F717. Used to have the Canon A70. (Not the G5 but has a few similarities)
A few comments on the F717
Likes:
5 x zoom
Low / no light focus
Nightframing (Good for dark place photos)
Fast Focus
Pop up flash is high enough to avoid red-eye
TTL Finder
Dislikes:
Canon was faster to display images
Canon has more intuitive menus
Deletion & rotation of images is faster/easier on the canon.
10 x Image enlargement where sony has a slow 5 x
SIZE
Memory stick is expensive.

Hope this helps

More pros on the F717:

Rock-solid and reliable,
Large, sharp Carl Zeiss® lens,
Just enough weight and size to get sharp, hand-held images,
Adjustable lens/body tilt (how else can you use a tripod at different heights?),
Memory Stick® and Memory Stick Pro® has proven to be more reliable than CF,
Built-in (!), fast charger,
Fast focus, shot-to-shot and start-up time.

Cons:

The F828 will likely replace this model in about a year, when its birth defects should be somewhat addressed and corrected.

Thanks for the help guys, I went with the Sony and got it a week ago. This camera is simply fantastic.

Here's a shot I was considering for the current point of view challenge I took with it but decided not to.

And two more I took at the zoo
