I shot this in my garage today with the following:

Equipment:

Canon EOS 10D
Sigma 105mm F2.8 1:1 macro lens
(EDIT)(Lighting is just ordinary Home Depot shop lights)
2 - 500w metal halide lamps
1 - 100w incandescent

1 black piece of poster board
1 white piece of poster board

Shot at an angle to get total black backgound with black/white reflection in the water drop.

Shot in Canon CRW (Raw) mode
Converted to JPEG

Photoshop:

Level adjustment
Cropped 4x6
High Pass with soft light
Framed with 50% opacity white frame

These berries were very small, about the size of a small nail head. Very hard to pick up without crushing them.

I shot numerous times while misting the branch and berries with water.

Comments are welcome

You don't want my comments as I have no superlatives to do your image justice :)

That is just amazing! I was wondering what you did with the white poster board until I looked hard at the reflection - that is what that was for right?

Okay, if I'd actually read - you've actually said that. What a great shot!

FYI

The white halo/outline on the left side of the berry is not from sharpening it is from the sheet of water and the reflection from the lighting.

This shot allowed me to do two of my favorites in one shot and not use a cliche setup.

1. A shot of a red berry using black background.
2. The dual colored reflected background
(I was happy to see I could do this in just a very small drop of water)

This is from another shot (CRW-3955..) using the same setup as the first one I posted (CRW-3944). In this shot I managed to catch a longer drop.

The only changes are (Per comments received via PM or etc.):

Cropped 1:50 - 8x12
Added more room to the bottom of the photograph below the drop.

I added another adjustment layer and used an underwater filter to try for a more liquid feel.

The one thing I like most in the revised shot is that the leaf is not as prominent! The composition is definatly better also.

Thank you very much for taking the time to comment.

One problem I had with the first shot was I got so close with the macro lens I did not leave enough room at the bottom of the photo below the drop to allow for cropping and composition.

Also I'm not sure if the feeling comes across for the actual size of the berry which I was after also. I have worked on it so long today I will have to judge that later :)

Do you think the drop of water gives that feeling easliy?

IMHO (and with a minimal amount of experience in this area) the scale of some items is very hard to convey in macro photography. With some subjects (bugs and flowers fore example) you do not need a comparison because people know what size the item is. With other items it is not so easy to convey. You seem to have reached a middle ground here. You can't tell exactly how small the item is, but the droplet makes you realize that it is small. The worst thing I think you can do is put something totally unrelated in the shot to give perspective. I've only seen one shot like that that I REALLY liked...

Ron

Thanks so much for your time and comments.

I like this shot better because there is a little more color in the upper right corner and the leaf on the left came out better.

My wife and I trimmed this berry branch from a bush while Christmas shopping and I wanted to do something with it. She is an Acountant and had to work today (Year end) to make up for the week and a half off so I was tinkering in the garage with numerous ideas. I probably shot about 200-250 shots total and got maybe 3 or 4 I like really well.
