Most people dont even have a clue what officers go through every day on the job.... They put their lives on the line to ensure everyone's safety... You dont see what went on before this video started.... or know whether the kids were violating city ordinances... or whether they were being punks. /off soapbox

Can you tell I work in law enforcement :P

I think Mr. Officer of the Law needs to lay of the roids.

That was a young girl that cop was choking. I know cops have a difficult job but that was a bit extreme for a kid that was armed with nothing but a skateboard and a typical teenager attitude.

Too many times police choose use of force when they could probably talk through the matter instead. I have witnessed it and seen it on tv plenty of times.

Hopefully the kids parents will find out exactly what happened and then if posible take legal action. I certainly would not want a 200+ lb cop laying on top of and choking my un-armed child, especially for a minor offense like riding her bike or skateboard.

Kids nowadays deserve a good choking and a beating or two.

Edit: Forgot to add a ;-)

That's not why he did it; the kid was resisting arrest. Watch the video; all of them the cops tried to arrest were fighting not to be arrested, making breaks for freedom, whatever. The cops sat the one kid on a chair, and she made a break for it. What are they SUPPOSED to do? let the kids not get arrested 'cuz they are kids? What good is that gonna do any of us in the long run?

The kids are very much bearing some responsibility here. basic rules of society say when lawful authority is arresting you, then you submit. let the lawyers sort it out. Resisting arrest is a crime, even if the arrest itself should later turn out to be unwarranted.

And what's the actual EVENT anyway? As far as I can see, we have a municipality that forbids skateboarding on public sidewalks; most of the have laws like this, because skateboarding on public sidewalks is very dangerous for the non-skaters. It looks like the kids organized a "skating protest". Do the police not have the responsibility to stop this event?

Yeah, they should've been tasered. That would have stopped them in their tracks.

Oh yeah: ;-)

Omg that's absolutely fucking ridiculous and that cop deservs to be charged and fired.
Brutality like that, he's gone power mad and all the bullshit excuses he was firing off for arresting them, BATTERY? because he had a tiny scratch on his arm from wretling them both, he's the one who just had his hands round the girls neck!!!!

C'mon Ben; he was ARRESTING her and she started resisting the arrest. Nothing would have happened if she'd just sat down and behaved. Isn't that the right thing to do? Do you advocate citizens resisting arrest if they don't think it's "fair"? Do you advocate cops letting their detainees GO if they make a break for it? Sheesh...

Did he go a little overboard? Maybe he did, sure. But she bears a lot of responsibility here also.

I agree they definately should not have run off, but i don't think the girl was resisting arrest, just resisting getting her ass kicked, the force used was terrible, a 13 year old girl being very forcefully held by the neck?

What i'm trying to say is that i think he handled the situation extremely poorly. Upon realising that i think he mentioned all the 'offences' as excuses as they didn't really do any of them.

Gotta agree with you Robert. We don't know what happened before the video, and the basic facts are that the kids started off by breaking the law, and then running from the cops.

If this was a dingy, mid-20's thug, the officers would have reacted the same way, and we'd be cheering them on in an episode of "Cops".

I think this is a simple case of a cop with too much power loosing his temper. A nasty combination. With all the charges he listed the kid with the video cam could spend a month in jail(depending on the state). Does what he did warrant a criminal record and Jail time. I don't think so.

I'll just say I never want to be a cop. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. I do agree that the cop seems to be imflamming the situation a bit with his bravado. "YER GOIN TO JAIL!" Ya, that's gonna calm the skater dude down...

First, where is it that the kid being choked is a girl? I think that's incorrect. His name is shown as "Jarad" in the video.

I think there's plenty going wrong on both sides here. The kids shouldn't have resisted arrest. Period. Full stop, and everything they said and did afterward doesn't change that.

That said, Robert and Sunniee, police have to project safety, not just "no breaking of the law." When they react with such strong physical violence, they don't exactly reassure people they're under control. On the other hand, once he got the kids on the ground, I think he was fine. He told the kid repeatedly to stop talking, but the kid seemed intent on continuing to bait the cop.

I also don't understand what the kid with the video was being arrested for. I'd be curious to know more, because the video makes it appear that he was arrested for interfering, when he wasn't in the way at all.

I only saw one of them run... when the cop tried to take the camera after he said he got a picture of the cop choking his friend... the rest of them stayed there on their own. Except when they ran down the road to see if he caught the guy with the camera. When he grabbed that little girl by the neck (who was just standing there) that was the overboard part. No matter what, he was way out of line... not like they had guns or knives, they are kids.

Whatever they were doing to get teh police attention doesn't warrant a fully grown adult male w/ training to handle a child like that. How much force is really necessary to restrain a 13 year old? He could have easily held them w/ one hand and called on his radio for more officers if he really thought it was escalating. this guy appeared to really want to try some of his restraining techniques.

this cop sucks and I hope he looses his job for this. Its not that arresting them was wrong, but deal w/ the situation as needed. If this guy wrestles kids to the ground and puts them in headlocks etc... how is he going to deal w/ someone larger and actually a criminal. He has police brutality/unnecessary shooting written all over him.

Lastly, if I were this cop I would be embarrassed that I couldn't restrain a child and there is video proof of that. He couldn't get any of them still until he sat on them, what kind of training did this guy get?

Playing the Devil's advocate here... what would your reaction be if you called the police complaining about kids harassing you and defacing your properthy and they responded by saying " Well...it's not like they have guns or knives, they are kids."

It is quite easy to cast aspersions on the intents and actions of an individuals when things are viewed in isolation, without the benefit of the whole pletora of informations that may be available.

Similarly, would we applaud nonfeasance on the part of the officer if he had simply cast a blind eye and some unfortunate pedestrian had been injured or maimed by these young skateboarders.

Sorry, but there are venues and competent people whose duty is to review such undertakings, and render judgements as to the propriety of police activities, and I would defer the decision making process to them.

This is what I was refering to about the girl.

She should not have run. But i would really like to know what she did that the cop wanted her to sit down in the first place. He was on a total power trip. I think all cops should have to take a year of mental evaluation tests before they get that badge.
