What are your voting thoughts of photos with the same model, same location, different pose that are in two different challenges, yet one is completed and the other is still voting? It's VERY easy to tell who took the photograph.

Thoughts?

Stuff happens... Some of us do not have access to different models/locals/backdrops/props (the list goes on)... Does that mean we should be limited to what we can enter?
06/26/2007 07:34:52 PM · #3
You will find many recognizeable subjects/models/locations within many of the current/old/future challenges. How you handle that is entirely up to your own beliefs on the situation.

why does it matter if you know who took the photograph? it should'nt make you like or dislike it any more
06/26/2007 07:36:29 PM · #5
A not too far off challenge two photographers who were not together took a picture of the same thing in the same location in the middle of no where.

Doesnt have to be the same photographer although it would be rarer for the same model to work with two photographers that are both on DPC.

Voting guidelines would create a statement as such: vote them as if you had not see the image before.

For me if they were both the same chances are I'd vote them the same IF I remembered seeing them at all.

Along a similar line I was wondering what the etiquette is on entering the free study with an image SIMILAR to one you've entered during that month? (as in location etc - but processed differently)

Hope I'm not hijaking your thread bergiekat, just thought it was in a the same vein as the original question and I'm keen to know the answer.

It happens
black and white challenge score 7.2695
Free study score 7.3097
If you think its your best shot of the month I think you should enter it. :)

Your not hijacking. :) I don't care one way or the other, just thought it would be interesting to see what some thought. Personally, I don't have any models or lights or backdrops, etc. so my stuff is usually very unmemorable, lol! Just thought it unusual to enter very, very similar photos in two challenges that were voting concurrently until yesterday.

Not always, I do remember a challenge some time ago where this point was raised during the challenge because there were two photographs of the same subject from different angles in the same challenge. I know that's not quite the same thing as what you are talking about but the result was that there were two dpc'ers that went out together & got the photographs. This may be the case here also.

I remember not to long ago. . .

In the Wind II challenge.

Kind of the opposite of what you're talking about, since this was in the same challenge. Two different photographers in this case. It might not be as easy as you might think to determine who the photographer is. Personally, I thought this instance was sort of cool. :)

I've also seen where two ribboners took shots that were similar to each other but had each other in the photos... Both were sitting on a rock in the water looking into the sunset I think it was... Don't remember which challenge and don't have the patience to search...
06/26/2007 07:49:02 PM · #12
Same angle, same crop, same model, diff. model pose. :) that's how I remember it so well. I often see pics that are similar (yet different, lol) where you know two photographers went out together and both entered a challenge w/their similar photos.

Oops, misspoke. One is portrait, one is landscape. :D

I know what you mean. As soon as I saw the second photo it instantly clicked as to who it belongs to. I don't think anyone on this site could not see it.

But it doesn't violate the rules. I guess you are taking the chance that if people liked it the first time they will like it the second time and not think it is mundane. Fortunately there are variances in the second photo to prevent that mundane feeling.

There is similiar and there is identical. That example below of the barn where the only signifigant difference between the shots is that one is in color - to me the secondone just shows a real lack of creativity and I voted accordingly (insert snide 'look at your avg vote' comment here).

Similiar... There are a couple of shots in the Waldo challenge that are very similiar. I just figure it was a group of people at the same loc.

Yes, that was the same as I was thinking of.

these are both from the backside challenge and nobody commented on them being the same
-

both were taken on the Sydney/central coast GTG and entered without the other knowing that the same photo would be entered

Same hilltop, different 'models', different shooters, VERY similar titles and neither one knew the other would enter it.
and

Edit:During Garden Of The Gods GTG.

Look, sorry for venting here but I fail to see why people always need to bring stuff like this up when the voting is still going on, can´t it wait a day? If you resent it so much, feel free to vote it down but what´s up with trying to sway every voter to your opinion? Some people might just be able to do one photoshoot any given week and still want to enter both a member and an open challenge, what´s the big deal?

Sometimes there are perfectly natural explanations for similar photos, like Firsty´s example or the 2nd and 4th place photos in this challenge.

I don't think it matters. After you've been here long enough you start recognizing other photographers' work. I knew when I saw both of these in challenges that they belonged to Tuckersmom: and did anybody doubt that this one belonged to Art? Do we not automatically recognize Ansel Adams, Annie Lebowitz, or Dorthea Lang when we see their work? I surely spend more time looking at the work of other DPCers than I do Adams, Lebowitz, or Lang. I could go on and on, but I think I made my point.

I'll admit one of the smaller reasons that I don't participate in many challenges is because I'm concerned about my models being too recognizable. I don't think that *I* would vote an image lower just because I could figure out who took it. As a matter of fact, if I can figure out who the photographer is, I probably would vote it higher because it shows that individual has a unique style.

So who should get voted down? Same subject, same light...

There are few photographers here with very distinctive styles. You can even see in some challenge comments BEFORE the challenge was over, some voters would say Ooooo this looks like *** ****. That really bugs.

I don't mind the same setup or model as long as I think the voting will be fair.

Why does either need to get voted down? They both are very nice shots. I wasn't trying to get anyone's ire up, it was just an observation and I was curious. Sorry! :)

These are all very similar, yet different examples. If you laid one over the other, they wouldn't look near as close to one another. The one I noticed is even taken from the same distance, lol. Again, it was just an observation and not meant to piss anyone off.
