i also had a question based on importance. i dont have another 500 to blow on all the assesories after purchasing a xti and 70-200. but i had 3 in mind and thought you could help me narow it down by importance and usability. i was looking at a 1.4x tele, tripod mount ring, battery grip, saving my money for a dif lens like 17-40,or if there is anyting else you think is more important (sides a tripod/monopod) give me a holler.thanxs again for ur imput. peace

Batteries and extra CF should top the list.

Just use and have fun with what you have and then add more as you feel it is important.

Without really knowing what you like to shoot. It is really hard to tell you what you need.

For instance, I could care less about a tripod, but if I were a landscape guy, I might want one.

Edit to add: I second that. Start shooting with it and you'll start figuring out what you need/want.

my xti is fantastic on batteries. I actually think it seems better than the 350 was.

umm, try 500 pics per charge compared to the d80's 2000+

How often do you take more than 500 pics between charges?

I took over 7000 pictures in one day at the last sports venue I shot for. I was glad to have two batteries and two memory cards with me. One battery was charging while I was using the other.

are you saying you needed a new battery after 300 shots? I would get that looked at if thats the case. Not sure why you are going through batteries so fast.

I'm sure it's not so far fetched if you use on board flash a lot, the LCD a lot on full brightness, and with a nice IS lens with IS always running.

i'd save for the lens.

I used my d70 with one flash card and one battery for like 2 years and I was fine. Unless you're shooting a bunch at a time you don't need it. A good memory card and battery will always be fine for day trips.

Hmmm, my 400D is great on batteries. I must have taken about 600-700 pics without a charge these past 2 weeks. Admittedly, It isnt't on all the time, I never use the flash but the battery power IMO is alright.

Of course saying that I have just ordered two Sterlingtek batteries with 1500mah each, but only because I'm going away for 3 weeks and may not be able to find a euro converter to charge my others.

If you plan on getting a tripod to do night shots and or sky shots then you will also need a remote shutter release. They are cheap but I almost always have it in my bag.

For the battery life, I don't complain about the battery life on the 350D. I have three batteries and when one is dead I simply switch to the next one. If you have more then one battery it is important to rotate them and use all of them. Li battery degrade faster when not cycled about once a month. Maybe you should just get new batteries...

A couple other things to think about regarding battery life.

Shooting RAW will eat batteries. Well not the RAW part, but the sheer amount of data per pic will make it seem like it is. When a 1GB card used to hold hundreds of pics in high-resolution jpeg, in RAW, that number drops to around 130-140.

Preview on LCD - wanna keep your battery life up, switch it off.

Flash use as well will significantly draw the battery life down. duh

Shooting with an image-stabilized lens or in AI mode will use more battery power also. The more that lens is buzzzing about in the process of focusing, that's power away from the battery.

Your mileage may vary. Void where prohibited, All rights reversed.

I have 3 batteries for my XT ... I think they all do really well ... I went to Spain and Italy, took 10 gig of RAW images over 8 days and changed my battery ONCE the whole trip ...

My XTi is also great on batteries, I can usually get at least 700 RAW shots off with out the flash and with my 70-300IS on it. Unless of course I'm doing extended exposure shots like the last painting with light where the batteries only lasted about 2.5 to 3 hours but most of that was either the shutter being held open in bulb mode or it writing to the CF card.

As mentioned above a remote can come in very handy, I got the Canon RC-1 remote for mine which has a great little cradle that attaches to the camera strap when not in use so you will always know where it is.

The charger that came with your camera may be dual voltage. The one that came with the 10D is. Also, Sterlingtek carries dual voltage chargers. All you'd need is a plug converter (no power conversion) which is around $20 CDN at The Source so I'm sure you'd be able to find something at Best Buy or Circuit City or just order from Sterlingtek.

Get a battery grip so you could use AA battery. Buy some more memory so you wouldn't run out and miss any shots. With the battery grip it should give you more stability. I don't think a tripod collar is necessary, the EF 70-200mm f/4L USM is not that heavy, it's actually lighter than the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM. Save your money for a good standard zoom, you'll need something to cover the wide end, anything else comes later.
