This would be nice, but the majority DO NOT even try to see a MD in the office or the Public Health Care system...because they are seen here by a MD in less than 30 minutes. We ARE the Public Health System.
COughing for 3 weeks, smoking a 2 packs of cigs a day, and not able to get into see the MD in an office is a usual complaint

Nice to have someone on the front line confirm Spazmo99's point ...

Elvis you are an idiot ! If you can't see that the US Healthcare system is just about the best in this whole crappy world, then you've got YOUR head in the sand !

I mention New Orleans b/c even after a DISASTER we have great healthcare. Not only is the US system serving our citizens...we are now serving every illegal that can walk through the Mexican border.

If the New Orleans system can handle it's citizens and the Mexican influx, then I see it as the BEST.

great, insightful rebuttal. You keep saying that you have seen great care in N.O. well that is great but if you think that is exactly how it runs everywhere, you have you head in the sand.

I am glad you can tell me ten great stories for every bad story. but that is not good enough. for every Enron there are hundreds of great companies that do right by their employees. that doesn't make what they did less wrong or give those employees their lives back. You admit that their are some problems but you don't want anyone to do anything to fix them.

Well i would look at countries such as Canada and Sweden and then think about health care in the US.

I think its unacceptable that so much money is spent on weapons and basic health care isnt universal. The states is such a rich country and can provide for that easily.

The States is based on the pricipal of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" You have those rights if you like it or not, so the government must be responsible to assure you have them.

I never said it wasn't the best. I said it needs improvement! Glad to see the US education system works well since you can obviously understand that something can be good and still need to be improved. ok well maybe you can't. BTW the workers in N.O. know that if they don't help those people working to rebuild the city it won't get better.

best post ever. guess I should give up on Mensa. thanks for saving me the time. When my kids ask why they aren't smarter I will let them know that according to that great guy down south named Kenny Skidmore I am an idiot so they stand no chance. I always love being insulted by someone that is obviously a man of intellect.

Since you brought your kids into it Mr. Mensa, if your kids were gravely ill and you had the Concord at the ready, would you fly them out of the U.S. for treatment in another country?

Yes or No - One word only. Either answer and this will be my last post on this topic. And I apologize for all insults.

Instal bitlord then click on the link to the torrent file, when given the choice to open or save..open it and bitlord will kick in and start downloading it. when done it should be in a format you can view (mpg or something like that).

First, I would say that if all of these undocumented workers are receiving healthcare in NOLA, it is being paid for by the companies that are employing them, such as Halliburton, and other companies that are involved with the rebuilding of the city.

Secondly, I have been working in healthcare in clincial areas since 1983 and I have seen a continued decline in the quality of care since. It's not only that people without insurance are being denied services, but even the ones that are getting them, are being short-changed by the system, especially since managed care came into being in the early 90s. Eg. Stocks of supplies are kept low, and then patients are charged outrageous prices for them. A simple bandaid can cost $5.00, 4x4 guauze $25.00, and that's for the little stuff. There are staffing issues as well and a nurse or nurse's aide can be working mandatory double shifts, resulting in medical errors from exhaustion and reduced times staff has contact with their patients.

I'd like to know where your moral outrage was when the Washington Post discovered the horrible and decrepit conditions at Walter Reed Army Medical Center? A hospital that serves veterans! Were you throwing around curse words then too?

Things are never that black and white in medicine. A gravely ill person could succumb just from movement/transfer elsewhere. They may not be stable enough to move to another facility, let alone another country.

But I'll play your little game. Ok, assuming another country had an alternative to offer for my gravelly ill child, either medically, or economically, YES, I would fly them out assuming they were stable enough to move.

I didn't say ASSUME anything. You gave a typical liberal answer. Your answer says NOTHING. I have to assume too many things from your answere. Your answer is comical!

And while on the subject of liberals. You know what tipped me off first?

It was your lame Halliburton reply. The illegals here in N.O. are not employed by Halliburton. Halliburton is not even remotly connected to the effort here in N.O. You know why you threw up Halliburton? Because it has become the liberal catchphrase for the past two years.

I'll take them where they need to go for treatment. Personally, I have driven my son all over the Upper Midwest to a variety of specialists and surgeons in order to get the best care possible. I would drive him to the moon if that's what it took. If you're unable to get insurance, that care might as well be on the moon for all the good it will do you.

The fact that level of care exists in this country is a great thing.

The fact that it's not accessible to so many is an outrage.

I work with a lot of young, unmarried, impoverished mothers who use the county hospital as their only source of health care. The baby's sick and needs to be seen by a doctor? They go to the ER. They are having health problems of their own, like STDs or infections? They go the ER. These particular women typically would covered by Medicaid, but generally they let their Medicaid coverage lapse for themselves and/or their children, and when they finally go in to recertify, they have a 90-day waiting period for the coverage to be effective again. They rarely (if ever) have a primary care physician for themselves or for their children. When I ask them why that is, they say that it's too difficult to find a doctor that takes Medicaid, because many don't accept it anymore or have too many Medicaid patients already and won't take on anymore. They also tell me that if they are uninsured, the ER is the only way they can ever be seen and that since they don't ask for money up front, they can avoid the bills.

This is just one example of why healthcare in the US is so expensive and elusive. What angers me most is not being the average Joe taxpayer who funds medical treatment, but the fact that people like this then have the gall to tell people that they were angry about the 6 hour wait in the ER while the doctors treated other patients first. Maybe if the ER wasn't the primary care physician for everyone, it wouldn't take so long, or be so expensive, to get prompt and cost-effective treatment.

So, who knows who has insurance or not.
Most people with insurance are asked to pay their co-pay before leaving (usually$150 and up)...and almost all I have witnessed do. Medicaid and the Indigent Care Program are also required to make a copay, too. $3! I have NEVER witnessed that being payed...when asked. The business associates usually don't even ask for it anymore, anyway. The carton of cigarettes in the purse is proof of no money.
About 90% of my patients end up being Medicaid or Indigent care...less than 1% ever get admitted for their problems...because we are treated as a clinic and not an Emergency Room. that is why YOU wait for your problem.
If everyone is looking for socialized medicine...too bad...we already pretty much have it. Just others still have a choice to purchase more expensive insurance.

If more people had access to preventative care and were able to actually go see a doctor in an office, they would not be waiting until the problem has gotten so bad that they go to the ER for everything.

*****

Good point, Spazmo, and I would add to it by saying that in those depressed areas where people are using hospital emergency rooms as clinics, there may not be any clinics to access anyway, and the ones that are available to those communities may not be in the areas they live in or even see people with no insurance. If they did have insurance they'd probably not have to use the emergency room.

And it doesn't follow that just because they are being seen in the emergency rooms that they are getting quality care or that there conditions are being followed up, as may be required. Even if they walk out the door with a prescription doesn't mean it's going to work.

I don't know what's available in other countries, I really don't care either.

When people started suggesting to my wife that she quit work while I was laid off so that we would qualify for Medicaid, that's just wrong.

Too many people fall through the cracks.

The people who have access via wealth or employer sponsored health insurance always see nothing wrong with the system. The system is great for them. They go to the doctor and complain about paying their $5 co-pay. They need major surgery, the go to the hospital and get it. They don't worry that they might have to choose between eating and taking their meds. They don't worry that if an accident happens, they may have to sell everything they own to pay the medical bills, which they will be paying for many, many years.

If you have good insurance, you're lucky, be grateful.

If you're one of those who falls between the cracks, you have my sympathy anyway. I've been there and it's scary.
