The schedule for the DPL Season 1 playoffs has been updated:

Playoffs Round 1: Jul. 2nd, 2007 - Jul. 18th, 2007
Playoffs Round 2: Jul. 18th, 2007 - Aug. 6th, 2007

The first round will consist of 2 matches per division: (1) division winners from the Global League will be facing off against each other, and (2) division winners from the World league will do the same. As an example, given the current standings, the Ribbon Hogs are set to go up against Light, and Dodge & Burn will go up against The Composers, etc. This all begins on July 2nd (5 days after the regular season rounds are finished).

For the second round, winners from the first round will go on to face the round winners from the opposing League (World vs Global), and three winners will be crowned from each of the Divisions: A, B, and C.

Additionally we'll be having some internal discussions on the effectiveness of the DPL and how it has affected DPChallenge. There may be a series of polls and/or a survey posted to help us guage the overall reaction from you guys. Feel free to leave any feedback here or share something with us candidly via the contact us page.

I can't believe the Ribbon Hogs beat us =/
Great job on the DPL though. My team was wondering if the private threads will stay up between seasons or how exactly that will work.

So does this mean that any entries for the Waldo, burst of color, or solo challenges will not count towards the DPL?

no doubt the 3 division winners will be "unofficially" squaring off in a round of cut throat (competing against 2 teams at once) the following week

:)

The private threads will stay active at least 1 week after the final playoff round ends.

Correct.

I already posted a draft image for "Burst of Color II" in my team's private thread, before we collectively realized that the challenges currently open for submission are not part of the DPL. I assume I should instruct team members not to vote on this image, as anything submitted for the next two "cycles" (starting with Waldo) will be "votable" by team members, correct?

Thanks for the update.

Best,

Rob

I would think it made sense to place the "no-vote" coding on teammates for as long as they are on the same team, regardless of whether the challenge is part of DPL or not; for example, even now I'd like to think the Free Study would have the voting restriction on it. I'd think it should remain in place even during the "off-season" unless/until a member resigns from a team, at which point s/he'd lose thread privileges.

And I think the special forums should remain active for team members during the off season as well; there's much that could be discussed re: tactics, strategy, whatnot, during that time; plus, of course, potential discussion of whom to invite to fill vacancies that may occur.

I agree with Robert on this one. Lord knows he'd be too tempted to give me 10s otherwise. ;)

totally agreed! I don't want to have to scroll back through our team thread looking for images submitted to the free study, just to avoid voting on them ...

So is this right...?

Playoffs Round 1: Jul. 2nd, 2007 - Jul. 18th, 2007
Global League
Northern A vs Southern A
Northern B vs Southern B
Northern C vs Southern C

World League

Western A vs Eastern A
Western B vs Eastern B
Western C vs Eastern C

Playoffs Round 2: Jul. 18th, 2007 - Aug. 6th, 2007

Global League A winner Vs World Leage A winner
Global League B winner Vs World Leage B winner
Global League C winner Vs World Leage C winner

Here are my questions:
1. Why 2 weeks for each round?
2. Are we really not going to have an overall winner?

So we should start thinking about this like there are 3 DP Leagues named "DPL-A", "DPL-B" and "DPL-C".

I agree on keeping the private team forums open between seasons. I think it would be a good way to keep the teams in contact (if they so choose) for the next season. If it means "tagging" team photos so that we cannot vote on each others in current challenges I think that would be fine too just to make sure there is no "cheating" going on. For me personally - this is the first time I have been involved with something like this and I have really learned a lot from my mentors on my team. I enjoy their input on my photos and the camaraderie that we have built. Would hate to have that diminish during an "off season".

one week off in between to determine who won before proceding?

Please leave the private threads active permanently, or at least until a team captain notifies you the team is dissolving!

Also, next season, can you please put the Ribbon Hogs in some other Division? :) Critical Mass and Se7endipity currently have higher averages than every team other than the Hogs, and the other three would be competitive in every other Division.

I agree completely. Nothing says you have to share your photos with your teammates during the 'off' challenges, but for those who want to, it would be great!

I'd love to see the threads active permanently ... and please don't put the Ribbon Hogs in the division that Team Stranger is in!

The FAQ reads: "The DPL is broken up into seasons. There’s a space of 1-2 weeks between seasons, to give teams time to change around and recover, so at most 3-4 seasons per year."

Do you think maybe we could have a little longer than 1-2 weeks to recover? :-)

I also agree that team threads should be left open for as long as possible, though if they must close we could easily create open (non-private) threads for our teams. As for blocking future voting on team-members, there is already an honor system in place, isn't there? I mean, we've had one Free Study go by and as far as I know people simply refrained from voting on familiar entries.

I just don't want to be accused of 'friend' voting if I accidentally vote on a team members image ... because I didn't scroll through our private thread before I started voting ... I think that the 'no vote' coding would be great ...

Personally, I agree; but there's always people who don't trust the system of self-policing, and keeping the team no-vote function in place permanently seems to be a good way to bypass that concern altogether.

Ofcourse if the DPL were in its own challenges it'd be a lot less of an issue.

I got a question...since the DPL forum is selectable for viewing or not, can Administrator Announcements concerning the DPL only show up in that forum?

Not really; the issue here is whether team members show non-DPL images in their private threads.

I think the 3 winners is a good idea. It allows the season to be competitively fun for everybody. The little icons for the winners should reflect the Division which was won and naturally the A division will be more coveted than the B or C. (as much as a virtual icon can be coveted anyway).

We have enough teams with enough interest that having teams stratified by average seems to have worked well. Think of it as Major League, AAA and AA (although if someone is going to get offended by that then don't think of it at all).

I do think some sort of wildcard would be nice to allow for teams like Critical Mass and Trigger Happy with incredible team averages to participate in the post-season. It would lengthen the playoff season though and that might be a downside.

In reply to the OP on how DPL is affecting DPC...

I think the number of entries in the challenges is getting overwhelming in some cases. Although I am on a team, I know if I weren't then I'd feel like my image was getting lost in the mix.

There are some voters who vote low in a particular challenge intentionally to bring average votes down on all entries except their teammates. While in the end this is probably a "wash" because even if there are only a few then there may be enough voters to compensate that.
If it just so happens a new DPC and non DPL member has a shot in that challenge then they run the risk of 1) getting low votes because of those trolls trying to lower everyone but their teams entries and 2)less votes in general in a very large number of entries because most voters don't get 100% voting in.

We want to encourage growth potential for everyone and a new member having a skewed score because of DPL may not be getting a true picture of either their growth or their potential.

Personnally for me being in DPL has been the real reason for my growth. I started this season with an average of around 4.8 and have now brought that up to 4.9 (maybe higher after the backsides and neg space are calculated in). Before DPL my highest scoring entry was the week before the season at 5.5 and before that was 5.1. I now have 4 out of 6 images that are on my front page that are from the DPL season and two currently in voting that will certainly knock two of them off. In fact the one in neg space had reached a high score of 7.03 during voting and though it isn't still that high it is definately going to be my new pb. All this is in large part from the mentoring and guidance I've received from teammates.

But those who choose not to be part of DPL have a better opportunity to grow without DPL members skewing votes and getting lost among 400+ entries when several of them are by already established ribbon winners (ie ribbon hogs et al).

Looking at a score doesn't determine much.

If someone wants to cheat the system, they would have to vote low on images they believe are going to get high scores and high on images they believe were going to score crappy. If this is happening, it wouldn't be reflected at all in overall stats.

Simply voting everyone low only lowers the average score, it doesn't alter individual placing ... it useless to attempt to cheat this way. People will still place exactly the same, just with a lower score.
