It's time to play "Sweeping Generalizations!" :-p
Seriously, how are these any more or less cliché than the top scorers for either the Free Study challenge or the Pure challenge they were entered in?

Oh God forbid, they are just blown out and we know that blown out is awful. Believe me, blown out is NOT cliché. Blown out will get severely punnished ALMOST everytime. |

Can I give more than one ribbon? These are my top picks from the "Pure" challenge:
from biteme
from mia67
from jjbeguin
from ringostarr
And lest you think I only like black and white....
from nadiaC
from virtuamike
from tumitumi

in the "candid"shots, in all the competitions really, we hit the art barrier with portraiture, needing to see some traces of human foible to identify with; the percieved non-art or commercial factor comes where we see a face to admire or look up to, but not into. in the press of seeing and judging a lot of shots, stuff with real people who are not tragic beauties or bums or grizzled vets, one doesn't do the looking the artist did and would like us to do too. i liked both of these shots that didn't fit the mold 'cause the subject is really a kind of quiet pride subtler than its wonted caricatures. i've nuthin' against pathos and hyperbole either, but i'm trying to be more sensitive.

For candid...
It was shocking, it was emotive, it was disturbing
Yes there may be issues with the desat-ing of such an intimate shot but by heck perhaps more than any other image I have seen in a challenge it will stick with me
In many ways it would have been wrong that the impact of the image was diminshed by a ribbon this but in truth it was the most powerful shot in candid and I gave it 10
Just disappointed that njsabs2323 did not tell us more about the shot so perhaps after the challenge we could have understood more

I am happy with the score on this, however, I would like to hear from the people that gave this a 4 and see what they think could have been done better. Anyone? |

I gave you a 10 and a comment. I was sure this would score in the top 10. But still you have a fabulous photo with not a bad score. |
