In an effort to help bdenny out I started this thread so we wouldn't hijack another.

Please list your favorite lenses and what you like to shoot with them.

I will start:

My Canon 85mm f/1.8 is an awesome portrait lens. Great bokeh and a very sharp lens for around $350

My Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 is very sharp for portaits and can get some good macro shots for around $300

Canon 17-55 F2.8 - Amazing lens with great flexibility. Good for "walk-around", portraits, etc. Lovely low light capability. Sweet bokeh. Sharp as a tack!! Around $1,000.

From the looks of the stuff in his portfolio he could use a decent macro lens to do his work. The Sigma 105mm f/2.8, Canon 100mm f/2.8, Sigma 50mm f/2.8, and (if EF-S compatible body) Canon 60mm f/2.8.

Second (of course) the Tamron that rex mentioned.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II great for portraits or indoor events... the best is it's only like $80 bucks

Let's not forget the 50mm f/1.8 - the biggest bang for the buck in Canon's stable. Hell of a portrait lens and later can be used reversed for kick-a$$ macro :-)

Canon 200mm 2.8L

I found the Tokina 12-24 to be really handy for wide shots at weddings. I also agree with Rex about the Tamron 28-75; it's awesome for portraits.

I had good results with the Canon 75-300 IS USM for zoo shots and the like...a decent, inexpensive alternative to the superior 70-200 L lenses if you are short on cash.

Wanted to give you all some time before suggesting Pentax, vast range of lenses and with the K10D and K100D, plus an adapter you can use any Pentax lens ever made, plus the entire range of M42 screw thread lenses, including Leica, Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Zeiss, the list is endless, and you can get them cheap on ebay and at camera shops!

I'd almost call that a digital b***h-slap :-)

Pentax FA 50mm f1.4 both on it's own and in tandem with a 2x macro teleconverter.

Still playing with Sigma EX DG 10-20mm

I do, also, like picking up ebay bargains like a manual focus 28mm f2.8 for £9 ($18) to play with :)

That actually sounds enticing! Someone, slap some sense into me...
jk...I don't know enough to judge brands. I just know Canon is best.

Canon 28mm f1.8 - Sharp, fast, roughly a "normal" lens for APS-C sensor cameras.

Check out DPReview.com for both cameras, the K100D is a Highly recommended 6 megapixel camera that outshine many other brands with 8 megapixels.

Not to hijack my own thread but.....Look at the color of those braces.

My daughter chose her colors on her own.

I shoot a lot of low-light events at and for my church, both the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM and EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM perform very very well. I know these two beasts would last me a very long time, so thanks God and the government for student loan. OH and if I ever have the gut to try out wedding photography in the future, choosing lenses will be one less thing to worry about.

I think pairing these two lenses together would make an ultimate general purpose kit. If you're willing to spend, go for these two lenses, you won't regret. I know they're heavy, but we choose to use DSLR over P&S not because they're are convenience.

Two of my close friends are using the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, this is also a great lens for general purpose.

Holy cow! The 70-200 is massive!

I just bought it (the 70-200 2.8 is) a couple hours ago. Now I'm wondering how I'm going to afford the inevitable shoulder surgery...

The two f/2.8s are huge but not the f/4s

Talking about f/4...Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM and + EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM would also make a very nice general purpose kit. The cost is still high, but the weight is not a problem in this case.

I don't like pairing the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM with the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM because the 24-105 f/4L costs as much as the 24-70 f/2.8L

Optically all the EF 70-200s are excellent, but IS gives me more keepers.

Nathan.

You might think so until you hang out with some sports photojournalists and your 70-200 is at least half the size of their lenses. :)

I would almost sell the 20D and the Alien Bee light setup to buy a 2.8. Maybe one day.
