I'm thinking of buying a new smaller camera that my wife will also be able use. She will use mostly point and shoot modes. I have the Canon EOS 20D but I will also want to use this when I don't want to carry the larger camera or be concerned about changing lenses.

I've been researching Canon G7, Canon S3 IS and also reading a bit about the new S5 IS. Also of interest is the Sony H7 or H9.

Compact size(relatively speaking) and a decent zoom are important. I have learned to trust and respect the advice offered here ao what I am looking for is some advice from users with perhaps even pros and cons from each.

My major qualm about the S3IS was the lcd viewfinder. Not the screen, the viewfinder is an lcd screen as opposed any kind of glass. Some liked it, I hated it. I imagine this carries over to the S5IS as well.

I like the small Fuji F series for a portable point and shoot. I have not found any small camera that can match their low light capabilities.

Yeah, the Canon A-series are pretty good pocket cameras -- I think someone recently recommended the A-650. Still has the flip/tilt LCD and manual settings, I think it's a 4x zoom.

The S3/5 IS are designed to be more like SLRs -- they are not "pocket" cameras. But get one if you must have 12x zoom (like me!) ...

Panasonic Lumix tz3 28mm > 280mm, image stablising etc

If the 28mm wide is not important then the Fuji F30 is going cheap now they have bought out newer models (f31fd/f40fd etc)

I'm also looking at the Canon A710 IS. Anyone have comments about that one?

That has to be one of the hardest choices to make with 100's of options on the market.

There are way too many options. I'm really leaning towards the Canon S5 although it doesn't seem to be available yet. For me, the knock against the S5 is that may have an LCD viewfinder rather than a "real" viewfinder. I really like what I read about the Fuji F31FD but I would like a longer zoom.
Money is not really an issue here, within reason.

My search is over. I decided on the Canon S5 IS and I'll be picking it up at BestBuy on Sunday. Apparently they are not permitted to release it until then. I saw the camera and they have one held with my name on it. If there's something I don't like about it, it's that dang LCD viewfinder.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions and advice. I appreciate it.
