| The description says that we should try to "stump" the viewers with our shot... can we be penalized if it doesnt? in DQs or votes? |

What  klstover said. It's not an "extra rule" like some challenges, it's just part of the challenge description. So, you can't be DQed, but you will definitely be criticized/penalized by voters if it's too easily recognizable. |

my camera can do macro, but at 2 feet away from the subject.

That's my take on it. I don't see why it's not just called Abstract Macro III

Thanks for the link, I checked out that challenge. At first glance I could easily identify 5 out of the top 10 photos. So it *is* different from that, isn't it? |

I suppose it is, if our sole intention is to "puzzle" someone. I guess I'd rather look at a good picture though then just be puzzled. ;-) |

That's what bothers me about this challenge. When I can't figure something out I tend to score lower. I'm probably not the only one. So, how to present a eye-catching image, that is a puzzle, without puzzling the voters too much? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I've been wondering about the same.
I think, however, that "puzzle" means to confuse, stump, perplex, mystify, but not to make completely unrecognizeable. In other words, I think the idea is to make people wonder, "What is it?" and hopefully stay with the picture for a while, wondering. If they eventually "get it" it doesn't matter.
I'm not sure though. |

I think this would be the majority of the voters opinions. What I mean is we still want a quality picture that is pleasing to look at; probably not just a photo of some sand or a lego!

I think some will just expect to see a puzzle macro as in a puzzle piece. :P
ETA: Hopefully it'll be like Abstract Macro where I think those that did well did so because it was hard to recognize what the subject was.

I had a couple of ideas to use my new MP-E 65mm lens but am now thinking of a closeup shot (rather than a 'true' macro) that I doubt anybody will guess but it would be more interesting than a grain of salt filling the frame :)

Just a question about the rules- to get my subject to be unrecognizable, i've applied extremely strong layers of contrast and levels- nearly posterized it. I know this may not sound appealing, but it works for this particular image.
My question- can i get DQed for this? I know i didn't use any spot editing or anything, but with recent outbreaks of unfair disqualification, i wanna make sure in advance.

sometimes I think it is ok not to understand the image, it helps keep personal influences and feelings away and lets you concentrate on the aspects I think this site is really about...how well did they shoot that object? Is it sharp, colors good, etc...jmo

I'd love to be in this one but how macro is macro, my Tamron says it's a macro but 2 feet is as close as I can get so would that class as a macro shot? I end up with things like this but it doesn't look very macro.

I for one won't penalize w/a DQ or a low score. Sometimes, the subject gets in the way of appreciating the composition. A puzzle macro to me means I'll be trying for pure composition. I'll look for light/shadow, form/color. Same as when I'll be voting. |

Two feet away from something big is just as good as 7cm away from something small--this looks like a puzzle macro to me. |
