If you are planning to vote down an image because you think it is staged to take time to comment. Let the photographer know why you think it looks staged. You may find yourself debating your own judgment of whether it is posed or not.

Well Scott, I offered my 0.02¢ in this thread, and near the end of it, added:.

If it looks like a candid, it's a candid. End result. Up to each person on how they go about achieving it, even if it is staged. Hollywood stages everything we see on screen, most of it isn't real, yet we perceive it to be, so why should your photograph be any different?

Too many experts I suppose.

I really don't think that someone can tell if a Candid photo is staged...they just think they know..hense the low scores..seems someone actually needs a photojournalism shot to score...like a fire shot, or a car crash..I spent the week looking for something of that nature to submit...and as I got down to the end of the week. I ended up with a no look "Candid"..across the table at a public place..just listening for a confirmation and clicking the shutter....so I agree with you guys if it looks like a candid... it probally is..and if it isn't so what...

I'm not debating that. What I'm challenging people to do is if they find themselves wanting to vote lower just because it looks staged. Give the photographer some feedback.

Scott...I am going to play the devils advocate here. If you want people to do something...then you generally have to do it yourself first. Then the sheep will follow.

So I challenge you to voting and commenting 100% of this challenge. Can you do it...? I think if you show that you mean what you say...then others may just take up the challenge to.

A lot of photos' in this challenge BECAUSE IF YOU AIM YOUR CAMERA AT SOMEONE FOR A CANDID SHOT, YOU COULD BE SHOT LITERALLY,WILL BE OF PEOPLE THEY KNOW, AND I AGREE WITH YOU, MY PHOTO IS OF PEOPLE I KNOW AND AFTER SETTING UP THE CAMERA TO THE POINT THEY WERE HELD THE REMOTE IN MY HAND AND TURNED AWAY FROM THEM WHILE THEY CARRIED ON IN A NORMAL AN CANDID WAY, IT WAS ONLY WHEN I FINISHED DID I TELL THEM WHAT HAD BEEN DONE, SO BE FAIR AND CONSTRUCTIVE IN YOUR APPRAISAL OF A CANDID SHOT.

it would also be the other way around; if the photo looks like it is a staged candid, even if it isn't, then it will look staged to the voter. it would be up to the voter whether to leave a comment stating that or not, because we know how things like these could start some crazy, emotional rants later on.

On a lighter note, Thank You DPChallenge.

My candid, is of someone I do not know. I do know how to find this person, as this person is at the weekly car show in town (note - I am not giving away any specific info about my entry) and is a member of a local car club. The image I captured, is literally one of my top 5 favorite pictures I have ever taken - ever - and that encompasses 30+ years of clicking.

I am going to have my entry professionally printed, matted, and framed, wrapped in brown paper and if not this week, next week, or the following week, will find this person and hand them something magic, no strings other than a smile.

This will be the first time I have ever done something to this extent, as I usually get hold of someone by email and let them handle their own printing. Well this time, I have a small "nest egg" from the sale of this image, used for a company's sales brochure, and though I was setting to the side to get a battery grip, think in the grand scheme of things, this use will be far more meaningful.

If it weren't for this challenge, and finding the need to go out and get something for the team, I would have not put much time or effort into it.

Thank You DPChallenge, someone's life is about to be affected for generations to come.

Judi you know your talking apples and oranges here. I'm not challenging people to vote on every entry, unless they think they all are staged. I just ask them to let the photograph know why they think it is staged if they plan on marking down the photo.
As far as commenting on every entry, not an option to me. With my nerve damage from my neck (explained before) that runs down into my arms and other places. I can't sit, stand, walk, type for a long time. I had to take a brake in typing this message. Sorry I wish I could and I know my comments are down. I don't want it to be that way - that's why I'm saving up for a speak to text program. I want to contribute.
Thanks,
SDW

ETA: But I will do what I post. If I feel an entry is posed I will comment on it. I don't plan on marking it down unless it is absolutely obvious that its not a candid and that may be hard to define.

Brad I don't know my subject, never meet the person before, got an attitude after seeing me take the picture but when I told this person I was an amateur photographer and I participate in challenges the person calmed down and told me it was ok.

Very, very nice, Brad, and way more important than determining if a picture is staged or not. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing your shot..

I don't go to that extent, but when I take pictures of people I can find again, I do print up small copies and take them to them. This gentleman plays the violin in town at various places - just walks up (or is the case now, rides up), opens his case, and plays. I captured him in December. He plays Saturdays most weeks at the farmer's market in the square, so I printed up this shot and another and took them to him. He's become very gaunt, very fragile, and now has a motorized chair in which to travel, instead of pulling his small cart. I handed him the shots - he stared at them for quite a long time, then smiled a wonderful smile, looked up and said simply "Danke!"

Then that is all I ask Scott. I wasn't coming down hard on you...so please don't think I was.

My opinion is that if it even looks staged, should it really be in the category of Candid? To me, Candid it all about the feel, not just the situation of the photographer at the time.

No, it should not be in the category but why not post in the challenge? It will score lower for sure, because many will vote lower thinking it's staged, and in this point I totally agree with Brad when he's asking those voters to comment.
06/11/2007 05:32:47 AM · #20
If it's not in the category, I wouldn't think the challenge was the right place for it either.

Guys! If it "looks" staged then you have got to give the voter the freedom to decide if it's a candid or not. I had 3 images I liked s much for this challenge. I had fun yesterday strutting around in public looking for a classic moment. The one I most liked, to me "looked" staged because the guy looked up at me, smiled and posed to an extent. I realised that this being a "Candid" challenge it would get voted down by 1/2 of the voters, so I didn't submit that one. The one I did sumbit is not my favourite, but it seems the most "spur of the moment" to me. Choices ... choices we make we must live with.

It's no different for any other challenge: if it's a "Black and White Portrait Challenge" you just know you don't submit a partially desat image with the person's face in black and white and the background in colour...

So whether or not your image is of someone you do or don't know...you have to sit back and be objective and ask if it "looks" posed or not.

my opinion agrees with Ben's. regardless of how the image was achieved, it should look like a candid moment

Gotta agree with Ben... Which, consequently isn't disagreeing with Scott. If you think it's staged, let'em know!

Also, Brad - I can't wait to see your shot, as well! You had some pretty sweet candids in your portfolio, so this must be great! =D

I gotta say...I completely stepped out of my comfort zone shooting for this challenge. I generally don't shoot candids...I'm not comfortable shooting people I don't know. My shot was a happy accident...and even if it doesn't score well (cause, it may look staged)...I shot something new for me. I do think though, that we should be giving the photographer the benefit of the doubt on whether or not these are staged.
