Flirting with a 6. Started lower so hopefully this is a trend. :-)

Watch out: troll alert - was at 6.01 with 12 votes, and then at 13 votes went to 5.6 ...didn't even know that was possible in one vote. He's making his rounds so be prepared people....

I have often wondered if the DPC community relies too heavily on contrived, staged shots. Here instead of quality candids we have many, many photos without subjects; many basic technical problems. Bummer. Maybe I just scored a bad batch.

The odds of getting a decent Candid in a week's time are very low. It takes talent but a good amount of luck, especially in this case.

Sometimes you get three in a day but sometimes nothing for weeks.

So surely that's the challenge, stage managing a "candid" shot IMHO is kidding yourself on.....There's a lot of good portrait shots in there.
Stil, who am I to critique, i'm currently only scoring 5.1..... :(

Been skimming through the images - not voting yet. I'll make breakfast, fetch a cuppa and sit down to vote. There are some really great images with good processing on them. I think if it looks posed that's where I'll mark down, and if it looks natural it will score higher - well that's how I'm going to vote. I had a pocket full of fun shots for this one and struggled to make a choice: one went in to the "Transitions" challenge and one went in to this challenge... swapped out a really great portrait because it felt too posed to me (even though it wasn't) - so I'll be tough on any that look like posed portraits I guess.

You have the right to vote the way you want but I challenge you to comment on all that you mark down because you think they are posed. Can you do that? You may find yourself debating your own judgment of whether it is posed or not.

i agree, i had a very nice shot to enter , but did not because i thought people might think it was staged.

my shot looks like it could be posed but is not. I think it would be sad to have it marked down for something like this. Actually almost any candid shot could be posed. How are you going to know the difference?

Anyone voting this one should following this rule of thumb:

If it looks like a candid, it's a candid. End result. Up to each person on how they go about achieving it, even if it is staged. Hollywood stages everything we see on screen, most of it isn't real, yet we perceive it to be, so why should your photograph be any different?

That's what I'm talking about ...and I expect as usual some will be well pleased with that voting strategy and some will be defensive...but anyway, here goes - gonna start voting.

We'll see where things go when the non-night-owls start voting (they're usually less harsh), but I think my dreams of a six went out the window.

Not that we'd know if a shot was staged or not but are you saying that a staged shot, would be legal...under the honor system?

I would request that also from those who think they are posed, but we know it won't happen. It's easier to assume guilt and vote low and move on. What a shame that a photographer can adhere to the spirit of the challenge and get voted low for it.

Edit: Just read Brad's post above, and scoring-wise he's probably correct. A staged photo that looks candid will score better than a candid that looks staged. I could have easily done a staged photo that looked candid but decided to keep with the spirit of the challenge and enter a true candid. Oh well.

I thought this one was pretty good. Apparently not! :( I have one good comment from Judi. Thanks Judi! :) Mine was NOT posed and I doubt anyone would think it was.

I don't shoot candids. I'm not comfortable with shooting people I don't know...hoping they won't catch me. Mine is not posed...it was a happy accident that I caught it. I stepped out of my comfort zone doing this shot...which is a good thing. But, my score...not such a good thing...thanks Judi for the nice comment:

I'm less happy with my shot, especially after viewing it on my low rez monitor, here at work. I didn't have much sharpness to spare and it looks a dash softer, right now. Probably should have sat this one out.

I wish the challenge could have been held out an extra week just to give YOU the opportunity to find the magic that you seem to do. I love your candid work Steve.
