I hope we get to see alot of pictures of scantly clad women. :)

I'm expecting to see alot of children or old people in B&W or Sepia.

i could tell you what i'm going to submit, but then i'd have to kill you ;) .. let's just say you'll be pleasantly surprised : ) ..

Oh great... please make them GOOD nude photos so us girls have some reason to like them. I'm not opposed to naked chicks (I've been working on a 3d model of one which you can see here in fact)... but really, boobies alone do not an interesting photo make :)

That's good. My picture doesn't follow anything I mentioned either and while I think it looks cool, I'm gonna guess that its not gonna be all that great. But that's alright cause I set really low expectations for myself. If I can get to the top 50% of the images submitted I'll be happy. :)

I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to submit a photo this week. A friend of mine told me something quite poignant. It was something like this, "People are the most challenging and rewarding subjects there are. Anyone can do, say, a nature shot. All you have to do is find something pretty and shoot. With people, it isn't enough to capture beauty, you somehow have to capture their humanity. That is why people are my favorite subject." After that, none of my pictures seemed good enough. Hopefully I'll get some inspiration this weekend.

I probably won't either. The only person I know who is willing to let me photograph her and put the photo on the net is out of town. What is it about me with a camera wants to make people run away? Do I look scary? Is it something I said? ;-)

I still can't get a decent portrait of my son. There is always a hand in front of his face and a lot of protests. I also didn't get to go anywhere that I could get the good crowd photos I wanted to get. Maybe next week.

If the hands are bothering you I would suggest Duct Tape. ;)

I will agree with the last few people who posted here that its a bit difficult to get pictures of people. I always feel weird about asking complete strangers if I can take pictures of them.

Actually, kids in their teens are often very self conscious about a photo and use hands as a way to hide behind.

My daughter (almost 15 ) does this a lot. I use it as a prop. Allow them to use their hands in a pleasing manner and you would be amazed at the nice shots you can create, maybe even better than just a straight portrait with only the face!

Well, I went out yesterday to take photos of random people, and found it very confronting... all I could manage without feeling as though I was prying were photos of people who were a long way away, or had their backs to me. Only one of them looked any good, but I showed it to some friends and they said it was boring. Well... if I don't get anything better I'll leave that one in the challenge, and it'll probably rate better than my others for being boring anyway :P

I've found 3 different approaches to the problem of shooting strangers.

1) disregard their hostility ot curiosity and shoot them anyway, i.e. like this one, lol: not too into the picture thing. I rationalize this by telling myself I'll never see these people again.

2) smile or be ingratiating and compliment the heck out of them "that's SUCH an interesting shirt, and the colors look awesome. I'm a photographer, can I just get a shot of this? oh this is excellent, and thank you SO MUCH." (see how thick I'm pouring it on?????). Like these: Vietnam Vet, or demented seeming batman guy.

3) then of course there's the telephoto sneaking around approach. This can actually yiled surprisingly good results: chandra levy investigation. My camera, having a 4x zoom is limited a bit in that regard. I wish I'd kept my c700 10x zoom sometimes.

The first 2 methods require some guts, plums, cojones, however you want to say it : ) , but I have found that steeling myself and doing it has made it easier to approach people subsequently : ) : ) ..

ALTHOUGH, there's a 4th method that is the easiest of all: sneaking up on mannequins ; ) (warning, contains scantily clad inanimate object!!!!) victoria's secret store

Along the lines of magnetic's second suggestion for taking pictures of strangers, I seem to remember reading an article by a National Geographic photographer who carried around a wad of one dollar bills. If he saw someone he wanted to shoot, he'd walk up, tell them he wanted to take some pictures, and give them a dollar. Even though it was a usually a trivial amount (depending on what country you're in), it still created a psychological "I've been paid for this" and they were usually happy to let him do what he wanted to do. He also mentioned something about having to fake a lot of shots first until they got used to the camera and went back to natural and not posing mode.

Something like that probably wouldn't have worked with the "bored waiting people" since the mood their needed anger/frustration/hostility and not a simple "OK, do your picture thing" but it can't hurt in other situations -- if you have the money to spend.... *grin*

I typed this phrase in quotes into google, just as you see here (you can even copy and paste it), and it gave A LOT of stuff ! : ) : )

Make sure you put the quotes on, so google will recognize it as a phrase.
