Curious why some people gave me a 4 on this one?

Don’t worry I can take it.

This was my first free study entry. I did not expect to win and I am happy with being in the top 100. This is my new personal best. But I was a little surprised by the 9, 4 votes I got. Can anyone give me a little insight to what they feel made this photo deserve a 4? Every comment I i got was very positive and really only one suggestion about cropping.

I would love to know for future entries. I want to keep growing.

9 People here are trolls. :P

Seriously, you ended with a great score. Its best you look at the "average vote" rather than worrying about the anomolies. You'll live longer. :)

Probably, someone didn't like the fact that the bike was all distorted, or that it had brick buildings in it, or a girl in it, or sun and blue sky - who knows...but there is more than one opinion that what is a great shot.

Personally, i gave it a 10 and thought it was awesome.

9 people didn't like it. Crazy people who don't think pictures of someone riding a bike down a street are that great or something. Who knows, tastes vary.

Or go with the troll thing.

I didn't vote on it, but at 6.25 I'm pretty amazed at how well it fared in a free study. You should be really pleased.

It could be that some individuals viewed this more as being in the realm of a painted postcard rather than a photographic image. There exists a wide array of tastes in DPC and you should truly be thankful you did not receive any ones.

All factors considered you did quite well with that image, and as Idnic said:

"Seriously, you ended with a great score. Its best you look at the "average vote" rather than worrying about the anomolies. You'll live longer". :)

Have a great day and happy shooting.

To call someone that gave this image a 4 a *troll* is doing a disservice to everyone on DPC that spends the time to vote.

Like Routerguy666 says.. tastes vary. 9 people didn't like this photo so much... big freaking deal.

Why don't we try focusing on positives for a change eh?

I am very happy with the score. I don't want to com off like I am complaining or anything. I guess I was just surprised by how many 4's I got wen all the comments that where left during voting where so positive. Like I said this is my new personal best and I have been getting a higher score on each entry. I know that trend cant last but would be nice.

To think it wrong that individuals from a group of voters as diverse as DPC could think your image deserved a 4 and no one lower is to be naive. It is incredibly unusual for an image to have zero 1s, 2s and 3s. Not everyone will like your work. That is true here and in the "real" world.

I really don't think that 9 4's is a lot imo. You got 6 10's!!!

2nd place in this free study got five 4's and one 2....consider yourself lucky!

Well I got 3s and others who placed higher than me got 2s and 1s. Just the usual people purposely trying to hurt photos they feel may do well in the challenge. Nothing more.

baloney. some people didn't like the distortion. some people like simple compositions without lots of background detail. and they didn't bother commenting. most low votes are real. I give low votes to top 10 winners all the time.

Could be that it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over sharpened. I like the angle though.

That is why they win, Don! Give high votes and it is the kiss of death :)) j/k as I liked your comment on my DPL entry :)

I didn't get a chance to vote on it, but I like the distortion. My guess is it would have been somewhere around a 7 from me. But 9 people didn't care for that or something else about the photo, and gave it a 4. Why does it matter? You can't please everyone nor, I hope, should you want to.

What never ceases to amaze me is that there is no shortage of threads like this one wondering why 9 people gave it a 4, and no one asking why 6 people gave it a 10. There are at least 9 people, I'm guessing, who disagree just as strongly with those scores as you do with the 4s.

I like this shot personally but I would guess there are some reasons why some rated it low...

The main subject is riding out of the frame. This type of composition tends to lead the viewers eye away from the picture. Whether it's realized or just subliminal it can make people uncomfortable and cause them to react adversely.

Me? I don't care, I like it. Nice image... :-)

I gave it a 6, about where it ended up. I liked it, but then again I liked loads of others in this challenge.

Guess there are those who thought it worth a 4. I scored better than you, think I got 27 4's. But hey, it's just a fun thing here :)
06/08/2007 04:45:01 PM · #22
everyones got different tastes, one of my 7 scores has 9 2 votes. Not everyone likes everything. Some people don't like polished sharp shots, wide angle distortion, bicycles, who knows. Some people have very different voting criteria and a 4 would actually be a good score for them. 4 of any vote is not that many, don't worry about it. I think 4 is a very common "something I just don't like" vote but not a such a huge problem that people would comment why.

Thanks for the impute. I was a little concerned about the sharpness when I submitted it but decided to give it a go.

You think 4 is bad!
I got 2 people voting 2 on this image and 1 gave it a 4.
Not saying they shouldn't but they are out there - They are easy to spot. They have no eyes......

I understand that some images must be given scores that feel appropriate - I just know how I do my scoring and it would have to be pretty messy, out of focus (unintentionally) and have the worlds poorest composition to get a 4 score like that from me.
Oh well. Always makes the point watching very interesting during the challenge!

I'm curious why noone gave you a 1-3. Not anything against you but some voters here are a-holes, and they seem to have missed you.
