Some freak bastards kidnapped and killed 18 year old Kelsey Smith.
Read Here.

Seems she was coming out of a Target store and someone ran up behind her and pushed her in her car.

My father was a New Orleans policeman and one thing he drilled in my head --- ***Never let anyone get you in a car!*** If they do get you in the car, even if they have a weapon...make them wreck the car. If they are making you drive, then YOU wreck the car. YOU MUST GET OUT OF THE CAR. There is no other way. Once you are in the car and in a secluded area....YOU ARE DEAD!

Take your chances and fight.

I'm sick of young people getting kidnapped and murdered. I feel like taking a road trip to Kansas City when they find this scum and pulling a Jack Ruby on that bastard.

God help Kelsey's family.

Oh that's so tragic. I was hoping this wouldn't be the outcome this time.

Thanks for the post. You're right, everyone needs to know more about self-defense.

Luckily it happens less than 100 times a year in a population of 300,000,000. That is, being kidnapped by a complete stranger. Kidnapping by estranged family members is much, much more common.

Oh this is awful. I just read the article a hour ago and was hoping then that they would find her soon and she would be okay. Come home to bring up DPChallenge and noticed this thread. I feel for the family. Thank you for the post.

I agree with you and if I was on your way I'd have you pick me up. As it is, I'll have to use my own gas. People like that don't deserve anything but a bullet to the brain.

I've always said that if I had to I'd wrap my vehicle around a tree.

Ya, I agree with that. Luckily the odds are overwhelmingly in my favor. I just worry that the constant well intentioned warnings we hear in society do more damage than good. I do not want my daughter living in fear. I want her to be able to walk the streets at night being smart but not being scared.

Knowing that "scared" means different things to different people...would you agree or disagree on my statement, and/or would you inform your daughter to:

**do whatever it takes to not get in a car or to fight until you get out of the car?**

EDIT: Also...you said that only 100 of these types of crimes happen each year. That's about 1 every three days...that's too much for me.

I've heard the same from cops: Fighting back is your best defence. Don't get into a car, don't let them take you anywhere.

Yes, I agree with you Ken. Not getting in the car is by far the smartest thing to do and if you wind up in the car getting out at all costs is the best course of action.

Well they caught the guy. IMO it is the right guy. He took her across state lines to an area that he grew up in. No Coincidence.

yeah, I heard he's married with a 3yo kid. I really have a hard time wrapping my head around how someone can do something like this. Especially somebody that has a child of their own. There's just no way I'll ever understand it, ever. I'm so sorry for her family and all the others who have had to go through such a senseless trauma.

That Target is about 5 minutes from my work. I've shopped there, my wife has shopped there. Our friends have shopped there. I've been to longview lake, been to concerts there and met friends there.

For those of you who don't know. Overland Park sits in one of the per-capita richest counties in the country. This is not an area where you see much violent crime or thugs or anything of the like.

Most people around here think that's limited to Quindaro and Troost. Most people around here are more worried about being hit by a soccer mom than carjacked. I don't think anything like this has ever happened here actually. Anything that gets reported on the news is always some psycho who took his family hostage or something, usually across the tracks, not a random rape/murder of an un-acquainted girl in the middle of rich-ville.
