this was the shot that I took

What makes this shot So much better that it finished in 14th where I finished in 103rd.

this is not to say mine is better or vice versa, I am just tring to see what these to similar shots differ. I am just looking for insite to improve my own work.

ETA: Fixy linky...

Type "thumb" instead of "img" for site linked images.

You need to use the [thumb][/thumb] tags.

Oops too slow...

In answer to your question, your image isn't "bad" so much as it lacks visual interest. The lighting on yours is a bit harsher and the colors are somewhat ho-hum. The other image is more visually "pleasing" by using nice blue tones and the colors in the jellyfish compliment the blue background more. The focus is also a bit sharper.

My $0.02 USD

As a documentary style shot your image is extremely good. It shows the creature with excelent clarity and detail. The composition does not waste any space. However DPC voters are also/exclusively going to be looking at the image as a piece of art. From an artistic point of view the lighting is rather harsh and the composition rather predictable. The image you are comparing to uses some "negative space" as an artistic, compositional element and also has the advantage of a rather pleasantly coloured background.
In short , your image is a fine piece of documentary but lacks the artistic element that voters look for.
All IMHO, regards, Mike
