I bought Photoshop CS3 a couple of weeks ago, installed it, registered it, and used it almost every day. Last Thursday it suddenly wouldn't let me open a photo. I first tried my normal way of selecting the photo and choosing to edit with CS3. When that didn't work I tried to be in CS3 and open a photo from there. I get an error message and then it closes. I have uninstalled and re-installed at least 4 times, and gotten the updates each time, and it still doesn't work. Has anyone else ever had this problem?

What exactly was the error message?

It says it "encountered a problem and needs to close", says anything I was working on might be lost, and please tell Microsoft. The report it sends to Microsoft is very long, and I'm sure Billy Gates is losing sleep tonight after reading it!

Since this started, when I open CS3 and look under Help, the register, activate, deactivate, and update functions are not available.

My husband just added a laser printer. I'm not sure if the problem started before or after. He's not home and I am not going to remove the printer until I talk to him (I would do it wrong and not be able to print anything!). While I would be glad to solve the problem, I will not be happy if I can't have my laser printer and CS3 on the same computer!

It's trivial to add a printer so I wouldn't worry about removing it to see if it is a problem.

However, it's also easy to delete/renaming your preferences file to see if that's the cause of the problem. Have you tried that? IIRC the preferences aren't always deleted when PS is uninstalled. It's under Documents and Settings/(your username)/Application Data/Adobe/(your version)/Adobe Photoshop CS3/Adobe Photoshop CS3 Settings/Adobe Photoshop CS3.psp. Easiest to rename the file by appending it with .bak or .old. Start CS3 again and it will create a new preferences file. If it works then the problem was the file. If not you can delete the file it created and remove the extra extension you added because it wasn't the problem.

In Adobe CS3, there is a "Adobe Photo Downloader". Check it out on your computer. I disabled mine to lessen the load on my computer. There should be an icon in the lower right-hand corner of your computer in the task bar for it. Hope this help.

My husband called before the last 2 posts, and told me how to remove the printer. It is unbelievable, but I am now able to open photos again. I'll leave it for him to work out the details, but I have other ways to print and now I can use CS3 again.

Edit to add--thank you to all who gave advice!

I won't say I don't have this, but there is no icon for it on my task bar. Either my husband turned it off, it's on but not on my taskbar, or it was never set up.

chaimell--I'm sorry, but I may have led you wrong. The "Adobe Photo Downloader" may have come with Adobe Lightroom, which I also have.
