There are many members who complain about no comments...and then others that complain about the content of the comments not being helpful.

As some of you may know...I finished commenting on 100% (minus my own) of the images in the Free Study. I live in Australia...where we have a crap internet connection. But I managed to achieve those comments in less than 24 hours.

Some of you didn't like my comments...well tough. I told the truth as I saw it.

So my statement to you is this....if you feel you have something to complain about...then get off your butt and get into that Free Study Challenge and see if you can comment on 100% also.

Who wins from this...we all do...we all get more comments and some of us might actually learn something from the comments.

So tell me...do you have what it takes...or are you just full of wind.

Now show me!!!!

Very well stated.

And yes I got your comment. I like my picture but you pointed out some areas I went wrong in processing. I found it to be a VERY helpful comment. A commenter should put feelings aside and let the photograph know how they feel. And the photographer should have an open mind and take that comment into consideration as a learning tool.

Thanks,
SDW

ETA: I'm going to try. Limited by my typing ability (nerve damage in my arms) but will do my best. Wheres a good FREE voice to text program when you need one. :)

Judi,

I love this challenge and would love more to see the complainers take you up on this.

I will definitely try! I don't know that I am able to put into the correct technical terms what I see in a picture, but this will be my challenge to learn how to truly evaluate photos for technique. But even if I leave comments like "good shot" that should put me ahead of those who won't step up to your challenge.

So, here goes...

Good on you both. Just remember...be honest in what you see...and then both you and the photographer will learn.

At least you can say you tried....!

There's another thread titled "pointless comments" you should post a link to this thread there too. A lot of them could use a little challenge.

I appreciate all comments. Thank you for making such an effort. I recognize that I'm very new to the photography thing, so all comments are welcome. And beyond that, I also recognize that there will ALWAYS be someone with some insight in different perspectives and perceptions that will likely be helpful down the line.

Bottom line...WELL SAID. Thank you for laying this down. Good luck to all that take up Judi's challenge.

I doubt I'll comment on all, but good for you, for making the effort. Judi - where'd your portfolio go?

Judi....You normally comment on so many...you are one of the best....that you have more than made up for it.

As for my portfolio...well I figured...as some people made it quite clear that I do nothing but cause trouble on this site...that I may as well not bother showing that I can actually take a photo and that I do know what I am talking about. Those people don't like to see the positive in people...their cup is always half empty...!

So let's see if those people have what it takes...or they are truly....full of wind.

Yeah, I hear ya. I'm rather irked with the overall atmosphere in general lately, but hope it'll get back to "the good old days."

I was particularly fond of your horse images and loved the selective desat shot.

Oh, back to commenting... ;~D

You have rated 137 of 617 images (22%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 139 images (23%) in this challenge.

I started last night, I hope to vote on all pictures that are legal for me to vote on. I hope to comment on every picture.

I have a bridal shower today so I probably won't be able to do much today :( .. but no worries, I shall return tomorrow or late tonight! haha.

This is a tough thing to do Judi, I respect you very much for completing this challenge so quickly, great job.

That's fantastic.

I was once told that "The only way you can lose at anything is if you don't try"....so that already makes you a winner.

Aww thanks sweetie. I will stick around don't worry. There are some great people on here...many very close friends...and realistically...that outweighs the morons who have their heads up their butts.

LMAO!!

Well, I just wanted to let you know that in my opinion I find your comments useful and helpful. I want to learn so that means I will have and can take the truth. I might not always agree with the comment 100% but I can usually see what others are saying and that opens my eyes for the next time. So bring your comments on. Oh, thank you for commenting on mine in the free study May challenge. I am amazed that anyone can really find the time with so many entries. I am currently trying to just get through voting.

There's trouble in River City? Not from you, Ms Judi - not from you. You're pleasing as punch to the vast majority of us. Well, at least to the vast majority my posse. :)

JUudi,

I've long felt that commenting is an area where one is either part of the solution, or part of the problem. Thanks for choosing to be part of the solution.

I hope you don't mind me making a shameless plug here, but please remember that all comments made today and tomorrow (DPC Server Time) still count toward Comments for a Cure.

Thanks again!

Judi while I commend you on your great efforts to comment and bring light to something that is either complained if you dont get comments, or complain when you get what as seen as a not useful comments. I have an observation that puzzles me. According to your stats you voted on and commented on 614 photo. Meaning that if you stayed up for a straight 24 hours you would have had to have voted and commented on 25 photos per hour, giving you just over 2 minutes per photo to view/select vote/type comment. This assuming you stayed up for a straight 24 hours, if you actually spent less time voting, ie having dinner, bathroom breaks, sleeping, than you would have spent less time per photo on each one.
Basing that you spent a straight 18 hours doing this with no breaks then you spent 1.74 minutes per photo.

I understand that you have a great understanding of photography and the technicallities of such. But I think you also point out in your own way one of the problems with people voting on this site. No one actually takes the time to do more then a gut reaction to a photo hit a number and then goes on to the next. However if your standard is to set a baseline score and then review them later in the week thats another thing, however with so many in the challenge I dont see many people doing this.

This is just my observation and is in no way a rant/complaint/whine.

I agree that this is by far the most common voting method, but I've gotten quite a few comments which were thoughtful and substantial; even a couple where people actually went and researched some background information before voting.

Even one comment which shows that the photo "reached" someone makes the enterprise "worth it" to me.

I was surprised when I got a comment from you Judi, I don't think I've ever gotten one from you before. Then I saw this thread and it clicked. Not complaining, heavens no, I was just surprised to see a comment from you, that's all. And it was a nice comment, thank you.

GeneralE, My experience quite parallels your own.

Judi For whatever it's worth, in my life experience, people will give you the respect you want in the exact same split second that...you don't need it anymore. Removing your portfolio won't punish them...producing amazingly beautiful photos like yours...will punish them far more and make you an untouchable.

Hmmm...I'm disappointed not to see a little more stubbornness out of you.

Thanks for commenting on mine Judi... you are the only comment I have so far. It is QUITE helpful too. I think I want to take on this challenge as well. And please bring back your portfolio! As a bland photographer, I can truly say I need to see the real good stuff (which includes your pictures) every once in a while to keep myself on track and inspired. :)
